Which has the better gas mileage all things being equal?
Checking out used trucks and looking for the best mileage out of a 3/4 ton.
Not planning on pulling any big loads just trapping gear and critters.

I figured...of course the truck that has the 4: 10 is the one I want...color and preference.

GM usually puts 4.10 in the gas model and 3.73 in the diesel.

4.10 would be lower gear ratio than 3.73. 4.10 would be better for heavy hauling, faster acceleration etc.

And for OR, 3.73's for highway and around town.

Also depends on the gears in the transmission. 3/4 tons usually have a lot of power, so you won't need the 4.10s for the extra power, but they will be nicer when trying to putt through the rough stuff without killing it or slipping the clutch (in a manual). Depending on how high the gears are in the transmission the 3.73s will likely get better fuel mileage on the highway/freeway. I've got an old Toyota I put 4.88s in, I love it off road, and it works fine on the 55 mph highways around here, but it is not a good freeway rig.

Unless you are doing a lot of freeway driving at 80 mph I would vote for the 4.10s. They both should do fine and have fairly comparable gas mileage at 55-60 if you are mainly driving two lane highways.

Then why a 3/4 instead of half?

What is final ratio? Tire size , overdrive all change things. A tall set of rubber on 4.10 would help.

Aren't transmissions usually 1:1 in high gear?

My 96 f250 with the 7.3 diesel has 3.50 gears and gets 20 mpg,pulls everything.My other 96 f250 has 3.73 and gets 15 mpg.I would never buy a 4.10 unless you drive very little.

Diesel 3.73
Gas 4.10 or 4.30.

I put 4.56 in my truck to haul the camper knowing hwy unloaded mpg would suffer. Towing mpg stayed the same but… I'm towing 65-70 now instead of 50-55. Also a lot more fun to drive! cool

Any 3/4 or 1t truck will cost you one way or another it all works out the same. Really comes down to what headache you prefer.

Chevy, 2015 2500 with 4:10's that said, I put cat back exhaust on it 2 year's back.
Helped Miles to gallon.

Lit foot helps also, run ac/Delco filters Air.

Full synthetic rear/front differential lube.

Pull 5th wheel camper/ small trailer for wheeler.

Of course in hills/ mountains.

Had 4 10 rear end in a ranger once.
Great off road-pig on gas on the highway.

New one got 4 55
