We lost one of our tower stands to wind this year- after we removed the trees from a clearcut, it became fair game for the Gales of November. We talked about adding additional anchoring next year but never got that chance. It was secured by cables running down to a center deadman anchored in the ground, in addition to 4 x4's extending beyond the base and pulled the whole Nope right out of the ground, the stand was there for 16 years prior to that and survived a lot of straight-line winds but had tree protection. I’ve used several anchoring methods in the past, cables, 4 x 4 wider bases lagged in perpendicular at ground level and T-Post mounting stakes driven in alternative at angles, the majority of our towers are 20’ high. What anchoring methods have worked for tower stands in your neck of the woods?

Have you tried the screw in earth anchors from fleet farm, Menards? Otherwise, go talk to your local rural electric linemen and see if you can get some old anchors. If you had an excavator of sorts you could bury them in.

X2. After losing a few to the same storms this summer, we've gone to screw in type anchors and cable. But if ma nature can take out concrete buildings, even this may not be enough.

I guess I am lucky and have never lost one to wind although mine aren't 20 feet in the air either. I normally just sink the legs in 24-30 inches and pout a half bag of sack-crete in around each leg.

I have nothing clever to put here.

The 36" screw anchor deadman is what pulled out

I had limited experience doing it so I am no expert But I fastened each post to a concrete slab I used the type of slab that is used to build a concrete farm type silo .They are about 10 inches wide and about 24 inches long Be sure it is leveled up And then I used some heavy duty cable stakes attached to chain at various places .By criss crossing them it can be held tightly And if it does not rock it is more quiet and stays solid

Look at a radio tower.

A lot of the older grain leg set ups around here, the farmers have I beams pounds in the ground at 45* then cabled off. Get something with some surface area that you can deep.

Yup, I study failures in the wind for a living so I have gotten a little tuned into what works and what doesn't

Guy wires are a must out in western Ks and the panhandle region

On a 20 Footer I'd pound in a 5' t stake 4' down on the last foot sticking out of the ground use cobalt bits - drill 1 hole big enough for a chunky add a link. Then Chain with a turnbuckle . On each corner.

Overkill is worth it to be secure.

Check out the anchoring systems used for mobile homes.

Build them shorter.
Can't imagine having the 20' tall.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

An old one but a good one: What does a hurricane in Florida, a tornado in Arkansas, and a divorce in Kentucky have in common?
Someone is fixin’ to lose a trailer

Bob- if this what you were thinking- it looks intriguing... same trapping principle of cross staking on a larger scale.

Agree- we hunt a lot of tag alder and at 12' you have zero visibility

so are the deer over 12 ft tall? LOL If you have to be 20 foot high to see over it then it must be impossible to see a deer. Might go shorter but place it differently. BUT no one that has commented knows your area like you do.
Like mentioned house trailer anchors.

the screw in anchors the power company uses when trying off power poles they are about 5 foot

but hey have to be out on guy wires at 45s off each corner if your trying to hold a 20 foot lever with a sail at the top of it you would need crazy strength

the other thing is lots of weight at the base might help

I was looking at one that where it would be would it is rock all around under a few inches of top soil I was going to build a shelf at the bottom and pile rocks in it

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Down here high wind is a tornado or hurricane for the most part. Some straight line winds but those come with tornado season. Pretty much nothing short of a concrete footing and hurricane straps stands a chance under those conditions.

Most 12' foot high stands will do ya' but 20's might be needed where you hunt.
