How many swivels do you run on 10’ of drag chain setup for cats/coyote/wolf? One at end of chain that came with trap, one at drag attachment, one at halfway point of drag chain?

Don’t allow an obstacle to become an excuse!

Three swivels in the first foot of chain and one at the drag is all i use. Anything past that first 18" of chain is worthless once the animal wraps up

I don't use a lot of drags and you will likely get advice from folks that use them exclusively, but I will explain my set up.
I never worried about any swivels in the chain on the drag or at the drag, only the swivels on the trap chain. If the chain is extended, the chain it'self will rotate enough to keep the drag flat and working and after the drag catches in brush and gets tangles around a swivel would do nothing on the drag chain anyway as it is already tangled. The only swivel that would do any good after tangling is the swivel at the base of the trap and any other swivels close enough to the trap end that they have not tangled yet.

I may be in the minority but the only swivels I use are on the trap chain it's self. The chains on my K-9 traps are 22" to 32" for the most part, they have 5-7 swiveling points on them (2 for double swivel, 1 for single). The drag chain is attached to the trap chain with a screw type quick link as is the drag. As you can see I prefer the swivels near the trap its self, they usually wrap up most of the drag chain when it hooks up, at least that's been my experience in the terrain I trap in.

As the others say, I have my swivels in the trap chain. Usually three, always two. One at the trap and one out a foot or so. Most of my traps have a chained earth anchor attached with a swivel. Probably two thirds of my drags have a wolf swivel at the drag attaching the chain to it. Because I had a bunch of them laying around and needed something to attach the chain to the drag with and I wasn't using them for anything else. But as soon as your drag is hung up they usually have the chain wrapped around something so that swivel isn't working.

Dont forget your pull spring, it acts as a combat multiplier of sorts with the drag. I have a swivel at the trap, one where you attach a drag chain if separate, and 2 at my drag, 1 in front and back of my pullspring. I love drags and think as long as the trapping environment can support reasonable use they are the way to go.

I personally don't think you would gain much benefit from putting a shock spring near your drag hook. As I and a few others (who have been trapping for decades) have mentioned, most k-9's will hookup and then wrap the chain up pretty good, this will put your shock spring out of commission pretty darn quick. In my experience a shockspring should be rigged pretty close to your trap to get the most benefit from it.

Any device that you ad to a trap chain to gain a "mechanical advantage" becomes almost useless when the "straight line pull" is eliminated (goes around or fouls with the device). That change in direction with or without fouling ends up being 2-3 ft. from the trap for me (no matter how long my extension chain is). So I concentrate any device (swivels and any springs) in that space. Everyone who puts a chain swivel at the grapple or drag MAY help the initial retreat but once that straight line pull is "wrapped" you are depending on the shortest distance between trap and any (interfering/direction changing) debris for your mechanisms to work. My take............................. the mike ..........P.S. anybody using Harris Shrivels with drags? ..................... the mike again

All my swivels are in the trap chain. I run a longer trap chain (24"-30") with shock springs, 4 swivels and multiple termination options ( double stakes, cables, or chain and drag). As Mike said, once the drag is wrapped up, swivels at the drag or in the wrap up aren't doing any good.

You can make the where = you could use them on drags or attach them to drags. Mix or match type system

Steeltraps, I don't think anyone was saying not to use shocksprings. I know I didn't. My point to MattLA about using them directly off the hook, as he stated he does. The point being he will lose all the benefits of the shock spring as soon as the K-9 makes a wrap or two with the chain. He would be better off locating his shock spring closer to the trap! My apologies to the OP for getting off topic. Gary

I never emplied that = No one said not to use them. What i guess I should have said was = No matter Where you but them = it cant hurt overall. At the end might be better. But = What if. What if or it turns sideways = hits a tree or a monkey grabs it and runs. May always come in to play ! LOL! I think. Where ever OP decides to put it will be OK and will help. Its all just matter of personal preference and where you trap anyway.
