I catch alot of coon on my coyote sets. I have always remade sets on a coyote catch. But never bothered on such for coon. But I remember reading in Charles Dobbins book that coon remakes are will worth ones time. And a good opportunity as the smell of the coon. As well has a lure or bait will spark interest from a coyote. Whats everyone's experiences with remakes from coon?

I’ve caught coyotes on remakes of coons, possums, skunks, bobcats, fox, and other coyotes. If the spot was good enough for a coyote the first time, it’s still good enough no matter what was caught there. Swap out the trap if your worried about the scent on it and reset.

Depends on ur coyotes would b my guess. Some areas even coyote remakes don't produce. Normally coyote remakes are my best sets but last year I couldn't catch a cold on a remake. Racoon remakes for coyotes here haven't worked very good for me and only have caught one animal on possum remakes and it was a coon.

Funny, I have read books by respected trappers that swore against remakes. I have caught several coyotes at remakes of coyotes. Red fox remakes are as good as anything. Never paid attention to coons and possum remakes.

I noticed the same thing one year, a remake wouldn’t produce. The year before and after they did. I always have two sets in the same area anyways. And I’ll sometimes add a set at the edge of the catch circle after a catch.

All remakes are good and get better and better after each catch. My experience anyway.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Same here coon remakes ? I catch a few in Texas from coon remakes. But in Alabama? Nope. Just cant catch a coyote in a remake. I always set remakes in Alabama but have few catches. My record for remakes in West Texas was 9 coyotes in 44 total day in 1 MJ 600 Sterling. I often wandered. ? Will it fire again. ? LoL!!

This is one of the eternal debates in trapping.

I avoid this because I use drags most of the time. It preserves my sets. I can use the same set for six months on control work here in Texas. These are wary animals. So a disturbance makes them shy.

There are no absolutes in trapping. Try remakes and set another set nearby (subtle flat set) to try and catch the wary ones.

I have a saying… “Don’t fret, set”.

Enjoy it. Play the game with them. Get to know your coyotes’ tendencies.

I don't think I've ever caught a coyote on a coon remake. Come to think of it, some years I can't catch a coyote on a coyote remake.

I've caught more coyotes on a remake after catching a raccoon than I have after another coyote.

So than. I wonder. With experiences differ trapper to trapper. Perhaps coyote behavior varies from one habitat to the next?

That's a question I ponder quite a bit. I'm the kind of person that likes to know how the clock works not just what time it is. U bring up any topic on coyotes and u will have some guys saying something works good and another guy saying it doesn't work at all. Without trapping different areas I've kind of come to the conclusion coyotes are mostly the same with slight nuances from area to area unless u get to the really high pressured low population ones. I think what makes them seem more different than they are is the trappers themselves. What one guys idea of good or effective might be different than another's. Take cars as an example, when I was fifteen I thought my 74 Chevy pickup was "fast" but to a race car driver it was pretty slow. First couple seasoned I trapped I thought a particular bait was really good cause I caught 10 coyotes on it, with more experience and some testing I don't think very highly of it. Good is a pretty relative term based of one's own judgment and experience.

Some may laugh and I may be way off, but I think all animals are a lot like humans to a certain extent.
Some people like being around other people and some don’t.
Some people like fights and some don’t.
Some people like being aggressive and some don’t.
Some people are naturally curious and some aren’t.
Some people are naturally suspicious and some aren’t.
Some people may want chicken tonight and some may want a hamburger.
I could go on and on, but I see it in animals as well. I’ll use a couple of deer I’ve taken. One buck was a fighter, he responded to a grunt call and came in looking for a fight. Another deer I was after would turn tail at the sound of a grunt or rattling. The fighter would show up on camera and not care who’s there and bully everyone. The other one wouldn’t even come in if there were more than 2 does around. The shy one ended up being my biggest to date.
Who’s to say coyotes aren’t the same exact way. We’ve read time and time again of certain “traits” in certain areas. In Texas they’ll decimate a hog. Down here in the SE they won’t give it the time of day or night. Some folks can place a burned log in the middle of the road and catch a coyote and some claim a coyote won’t walk that road again. Some catch in remakes, some don’t.
The good thing about this site is the amount of info provided, one has unlimited options to try and see what WORKS for them in their area. They all may be coyotes, but like people I believe they all act differently.

Editing to say this: Just because something may work for someone else and not you doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It’s just not what your coyotes like. We all trap in different landscapes and geography.

I totally agree with Yes Sir and Wanna Be. Been saying this for a few years now too.

Typically I make two sets quite close say 20-30 feet from each other at each location. After one set connects I remake that set and leave the other as is. I typically do not add a third set. Do any of you after a catch put in an additional new or clean set a bit closer to the remake or just leave the two original sets?

Depends on where im at ?? South Texas or South Alabama? South Texas or Far West Texas. Just use same remake. But = Central West Texas or South Alabama ? No I just set another set. Sometimes you just cant catch 1 in a remake with hard trapped coyotes. Sometimes in high coyote density you can. Set it and see! I always make remakes ! But I see few results in some places
