So I'm the like the crazy gun nut sniper guy around here . The fact I reload and slap a 10" gong occasionally @400yd across the cow pasture makes people think I'm some kinda expert crazy So I end up having people bring me their guns to sight in mount scopes or if something isn't working just right they call dad and he calls me . Lots of " the pawn shop bore sighted it but I've missed three deer already!" Don't act like I'm a gunsmith or anything but I'm always getting messages about this or that. Usually try and reccomended them people to talk with or places to go but most seem scared of the people and places I recommend so yeah eith me or I play middle man.

Well last year a guy down the road from my dad asked him to ask me to sight in his .243. Ok no big deal. Went to the house to pick it up and when he handed it to me I proceeded to do the whole safety check deal. Was one of Remington's real budget models like really budget. 770 I think ? Don't get me wrong I like trying to polish turds and make them shoot but this is one of the few I'll pass. Was kept outside in a shed so..... The person they where living with didn't want guns in the house at all......surface rust ,dirt , most of the mixed rounds where green , just wonderful! Well I rack the bolt back and since I obviously hadn't been oiled in forever it took a bit of extra " umph" , finally get it broke and the bolt proceeds to go sliding across the floor.

I'm wide eyed looking him because I think I broke it and he just shrugged and said "o yeah it does that" proceeded to tell him that's not normal he needs to take it to a gunsmith or just get a new rifle. He just waves me off says it's no big deal and gives me the money for the sight in plus extra for a cleaning. So anyway I worked her over sighted her in and brought it back and told him point blank ,he needs to take it to a gunsmith or better yet get something else because he's going to end up losing that entire bolt . He just waved me off and said it was good enough.

Well fast forward to today. Dad calls me and says " Hay you remember so and so , you sighted in his gun last year."
I says yeah what's up.
Dad says "Well he wants to know if you can fix something on it for him"
I say lemme guess .... He lost the bolt. There's a long pause and he says yeah exactly howed you know ? Yeah he lost it when he was out deer hunting and needs a new one.
I just sigh and avoid the urge to say I told you so and told him to tell the guy to send me the model so I can see about ordering a new bolt.

I'll tell ya, I'm nowhere near an expert whatsoever, but folks will never cease to amaze me when it comes to firearms .
Ok rant over

I'd say you need to become a gunsmith!

I was guessing 770 and the bolt is near as much as a new gun and would still need to be head spaced

It's in the works actually, hopefully in the next two years. Did a walk around of my house and my shed and looking at hopefully having a new roof on the house and have the shed completely redone re wired bid slide up door ECT buy this time next year . New roof by May hopefully. Already looking at lathes and waht not for a smaaaaallllll set up. Nothing super serious

Never used my GI bill so I have been looking at possibly taking some classes on gunsmithing. Honestly wouldn't mind finding one that would let me just hang around their shop .

All in good time though . Trying to take my time with everything from trapping to business and getting hitched ( not right now but near future if everything works out right )Big thing right now is waiting for my car to get out the shop so I can apply for this job

If you're gettin hitched, you ain't got time! Commit to being a gunsmith NOW, and let the rest fall into place! Marriage is a big time (one time) deal, and things come up...make sure you have everything in order to get this profession going, cuz if you don't...you may not! Congrats!

Read GREENCOUNTYPETE's post before you work on that rifle

and also yes I get it otherwise smart and mechanical people just make no sense with guns at times

my cousin has rebuilt the engine in his truck twice in the last 30 years but never oiled his 700bdl I had to beat the bolt open then oil it. it never had a a brush or patch down the barrel till I cleaned it.

A bolt must be fitted to the action, and head spaced, it's not just a slap in part.

You should look into the gunsmith program at piedmont community College in Roxboro NC it a 2 year program. But when you finish you will be able to build a gun from stock. It's where I went to taxidermy school It's a great place and a job and room and board wouldn't be hard to find. I still know a few people there that could get you lined up with a place to stay.

No matter where you go there you are.

I don't pretend to know you, but from reading your posts I would think gunsmithing might be a career that would suit you well. I was married for a long time (it felt like 3 lifetimes LOL) and I can assure you that however much you make it will be needed.

the Mossberg Patriot is a good budget rifle.
the Ruger American is a good budget rifle

both designs have been around

if it has to be the cheapest the savage axis is probably it also a decent gun

the Mossberg patriot predator comes in a cerocoat finish with a threaded muzzle and picatinny rail in 243

I have just started telling people WD-40 specialist DRY LUBE it is about half the price of the Hornady one shot cleaner and dry lube and seems to be almost the same thing or close enough they won't be able to tell

also works great in locks like padlocks on gates keeps them turning , I keep a can in my truck and try and spray the locks every month or two to keep them working

doesn't build up and make the gun or lock sticky you can use it from the firing pin to the barrel inside and out because it doesn't get sticky like most oils with time
and any ace hardware or true value can order it for you
https://www.acehardware.com/departm...luids-and-lubrication/lubricants/1014093

cover the scope and you can basically hose the gun down in it and not hurt anything.

dry lube and a bore snake and it does 95% of what most people need for gun maintenance with out needing to get into to much detail.
if they need it deep cleaned they will just bring it to you.
most people just need it dry , barrel wiped out with a corrosion protection inside and out then it can go in the closet again till next time they need it.

he should find a better place to store it than a shed maybe he can convince his old lady that if he puts the free gun lock on it that it comes with it can get stored in house some place dry.

I could easily be wrong on this but......a bolt is a serial numbered item. Are you flirting with trouble here by buying and reselling a serialized part ?
I'd tell him to deal with it himself or take it to a smith with an FFL.
