If you are trapping the core marten habitat (a large untrapped refugia) and not the dispersal routes-keep your traps farther apart(about a mile) to exclude some adult females.

I am far from an expert but when we ran in our "core" marten country we tried to set every 1/4 mile on sign and pull after 3 days.
I have nothing clever to put here.

You can carpet bomb them but keep a close eye on the ratios and you may have to quit earlier when you whack too many adult females. I realize its different in other places but I try to set dispersal routs, like timbered drainages that connect larger core marten habitat which I normally leave as a refugia. I will set up the large core refugias every few years, when juvenile pops are high, but when I do I keep a close eye on the overall ratios and keep the boxes farther apart.

Depending on if you have the tracks, you can set one or two every 1/4 mile. No penalty for oversetting a hotspot as well, might pay off and catch multiples. This, and especially set on tracks, even if you have to look around a few minutes for a good location.

If they have brush or log piles from thinnings that have been there for a while be sure to check those out for tracks. Stay safe.

My recommendation is to space marten set’s ½ mile apart within suitable habitat. Suitable habitat being relatively dense overhead tree cover and shrubs with “coarse woody debris” (downed logs, stumps, snags, litter) which provides protective cover for both marten and their primary prey. As "Boco" suggested, watch your harvest ratios of males to females and number of juveniles. A harvest of 1.5 males or more per female indicates a safe harvest. But, when ratios are nearly one to one some over harvesting has most likely occurred. Your catch should also consist of 6 or more juveniles per adult female.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.
