Has given up the ghost after nearly 20 years of service. It was just getting comfortable to wear. So now I am probably on the wrong side of the pond to get a new one. But if possible i would like to get one here. So what do you folks recommend. I am not at all into the modern fibers. That old coat has never let a trop of water in and it was just waxed cotton. I did help it along over the years applying a mixture of lanolin and bees wax every few years. But it served me well in rain and salt water spray. i would really like to replace it with something similar ... so what do you use to stay dry.

Try C. C. Filson if you want another 20 years out of a coat X2 Got mine when I was in my 20s. Unfortunately I outgrew mine years ago. Never got it replaced as my time as being spent in the office and papermills.

Whatever you stay away from goretex. I've gotten soaked to the skin in that stuff and it never leaked. They don't breathe. Something many folks don't realize with Goretex or any other of the "waterproof/breathable" fabrics is that the outer shell needs to be clean and treated with a water repellent coating. That coating causes water to bead on the surface leaving the remaining surface area free of a water film. Water vapor will penetrate the Goretex layer but will not penetrate a film of liquid on the outer surface. If the vapor can't penetrate the liquid film the garment will not "breath." I'm not trying to defending Goretex, just explain why a Goretex garment sometimes does not breath any better than a plastic bag. Goretex properly maintained works for me only under conditions of light activity. Beyond that I sweat too much.

I wore the old one whenever is rained. Now that can be just walking the dogs, hunting, sometimes even sailing or working around the yard. Mine was not insulated, so I wore it year round and when it got colder I had a weather under it.

I tried waxing a cotton coat and now it's like a giant flake of wax. Quite stiff, do I have to break it in? Or did I put too much wax?

Myside , I think you may of put a bit to much wax on it when I've re waxed my coat or even my tin pants I'd work it into the wear spots mainly , one friend would put his Filson tin coat in the dryer to warm it up so it would flex so he could get it on easier .
I wouldn't be brave enough to leave a tin coat in the dryer for very long or even my tin cap when I wear the cap it doesn't take it long to soften up .
