Back in the past, I mostly open carried, if I needed to. At different points, I could also legally concealed carry from both police and security class certifications. I also concealed carried in situations where a prudent man would have an affirmative defense that concealed carry was necessary.
Ohio became a Constitutional Concealed Carry state back on June 13th. A few weeks ago someone traded me a P365 SAS Sig Sauer, with a laser sight, 4 10 round magazines, ccw holster, case and 50 rounds of 9mm Luger for a puppy. So far, it has been an excellent CCW. It's small, lightweight, easy to quickly aim, comfortable to wear and can't be seen on me because of the way my clothes hang.
For those of you that concealed carry, how often do you do it? Is it an all the time thing or only when going to bad areas or are expecting trouble?
How many magazines do you carry?
Do you bother to check if businesses have signs up denying ccw?
Do you enter those businesses armed anyways?
We don't have to tell police that we are concealed carrying unless asked. During a traffic stop do you tell the cop anyway?
The way Ohio's law is written, it sounds like driving by a school while concealed carrying is illegal. Does anyone actually unload first or change their route?

Hi Keith. The CCW laws regarding schools are, you can drive by and can even be on school grounds as long as the gun remains in the car. If you leave the car the gun has to remain in the car and you have to lock the car. If you have the actual permit, if not, it's a felony.

I carry every day all day. No spare mags. In KS the only way you can be told no gun is if your are someplace with armed security and metal detectors. If asked by LE you have to tell them you are carrying and provide a state issued ID if asked. I dont worry about driving past a school.
I get checked by D.O.T./highway patrol time to time. They have never asked so I have never told them.

Good points. Since I have a license , the police know when they stop you that you can carry. Police that know me and are friends of mine , told me they check and actually like it if you have a license. They will seldom ask , I've never been asked when stopped for headlights or things like that. This new law will more than likely make them ask now. As far as schools are concerned , I don't worry about if I'm driving by. But if I need to go there , I make sure it's locked up. I don't agree with that law, but respect it. Just like any state there's some laws that just don't make sense. As far as I understand , I'll keep renewing my CCW so that I can carry in other states that honor it. Stores , I don't look any more. Very few around here post no guns allowed , as a matter of fact I haven't seen one locally.

I cc always. If contacted by law enforcement I inform, if stopped while driving I give drivers license and then my cc license while saying nothing. I carry one extra mag with 24 round capacity. In my state I can go anywhere that does not have armed security and metal detectors at the entrances while cc'ing but some schools may be off limits, I do not pay attention to signage unless it is enforceable by law. I have been in customers homes and interacted with people on a regular basis for more than a dozen years and they have no clue that I am always armed.

It's small, lightweight, easy to quickly aim, comfortable to wear and can't be seen on me because of the way my clothes hang. My wife carries a Sig P365. The short grip leaves my pinky finger with no place to go. I bought a 365X. It has a slightly longer grip and mags with pinky rests. I love how concealable it is. For those of you that concealed carry, how often do you do it? Is it an all the time thing or only when going to bad areas or are expecting trouble? I always have an older Ruger P85 with me in my vehicle, either in my briefcase or under the center counsel of my truck. I appendix-carry the Sig on me most of the time when I'm not working unless I'm trapping, hunting or otherwise armed. How many magazines do you carry? One mag for each, a 12-rounder i the Sig and a 17 or 19-rounder in the Ruger Do you bother to check if businesses have signs up denying ccw? No Do you enter those businesses armed anyways? Yes, if I have a reason to go there. We don't have to tell police that we are concealed carrying unless asked. During a traffic stop do you tell the cop anyway? Not usually. I did once because I forgot to close the flap of my briefcase during a traffic stop and knew he saw it. I did one other time because I needed to expose my pistol to retrieve my ID and didn't want the officer getting jumpy. The way Ohio's law is written, it sounds like driving by a school while concealed carrying is illegal. Does anyone actually unload first or change their route?
Keith Pennsylvania law prohibits possession of a firearm “in the buildings of, on the grounds of, or in any conveyance providing transportation to or from any elementary or secondary publicly funded educational institution, any elementary or secondary private school licensed by the Department of Education, or any elementary or secondary parochial school.” However: Pennsylvania law provides a defense “…if the weapon is possessed and used in conjunction with a lawful, supervised school activity or is possessed for other lawful purposes.” The question of what constitutes “other lawful purposes” continues to be litigated in Pennsylvania. The courts have not yet affirmatively, indefinitely ruled that carrying for self-defense is a lawful purpose. So, our advice is: unless you want to be the test case, don’t carry your weapon on school grounds. I do not change anything when dropping kids/grandkids at school. I do not carry inside school buildings.
Eh...wot?

To quote the late Karl Maldon, "Don't leave home without it"! "It" is a Colt 1911, Gold Cup, 45 acp, with 3, 8 rnd mags plus one in the spout. 25 rnds of +P, JHP's, and the rest of the box in a ammo wallet. Depending where I'm going, I carry a S&W mod 60, 5 shot .38, and/or a .38 Derringer for comfort.

Keith All day every day...If I expected trouble, I'd just stay in bed. No extra mags. Businesses that prohibit firearms need to demand you comply with their request (even with no sign). Only after being told are you guilty of trespassing if you refuse to comply...a $25.00 fine. On average I walk past those signs nearly a dozen times a day. For any traffic stop, I hand over Driver's License, insurance card and Carry permit. LE can look it up, but carry permit does not come up automatically with DL search. Guns are prohibited inside schools. The parking lot can be used to prepare weapon for "travel mode". This is, of course, per Minnesota law.

Keith first , it isn't Ohio's law , the only way around Federal school zone law is a CCL/CCP issued by the state. I have a WI-CCL so no I do not unload how often do I carry roll 2 dice and see how often you come up snake eyes , that is about how often I am not carrying. magazines , often just the one in the gun sometimes a spare the way the WI law is written they have to post in a way I could not reasonable not see it "prominent" at every entrance , but if you happen to not see it , they have to ask you and you have to refuse to leave to make it trespassing. If I happened to not see a posting perhaps it was less than "prominent" I would set down whatever product I had not paid for and leave as soon as asked. I have been pulled over once in 11 years I didn't tell the cop the gun was in the console , I had been at the county court house a as my previous stop. I got pulled over for not having my headlights on , my truck turns them on automatically , the wife's van didn't the city was so well lit I didn't even notice. If the officer asks we are required to tell them but for something so minor and so quick of a sorry I didn't realize, explained I was in the wife's van and my truck has them on all the time , turned them on he checked my license to make sure no warrants and no citation issued I went on my way. if it was possible for the officer to see my gun in some way . I would hand him my CCL with my drivers license unless I was in Madison or Milwaukee county in Milwaukee they like to "take your gun for the safety of the officer" then tell you that they can not give you it back you have to go to the special monthly get your gun out of jail court and request it back only the judge in MKE can give you your gun back. If I am headed to MKE you definitely not going to be able to see my gun in any way. how you tell them if you choose to is very important , handing then the CCL is one very simple way to notify without alarming them. if stopped and decide to notify ,turn on the dome light , keep hands on the wheel , and do not say I have a gun. Say something like I am exercising my right to carry concealed under Ohio state law.

first , it isn't Ohio's law , the only way around Federal school zone law is.... Bush's 1990 School Zone Law was repealed after a couple years and replaced by some crap by Obama. It is complicated, but, in general it is pretty much under state control, today.

In my state I can carry on school grounds and in colleges. The only reason I would go into a grade k thru 12 school would be to save lives. Not stopping for anything then.

Ah , thank you , I see now that the law while not re-written effected by a supreme court decision requiring that for it to be used had to include another crime so that just carrying in a school zone was not enough to charge without something else Wisconsin still likes to sight the text of the law and not mention the court decision.
