Decided to try and cook more with actual fats like butter and lard for a while to see if it helps me in any way and as I'm looking at the butter section in Walmart just about everything says 30-50% vegetable oil butter spread.... Like does anyone make 100% butter anymore or ???

Haven't made butter in 45(?) years. My grandfather had a dairy farm and when we were kids we got fresh milk right out of the milk tank. My mom would skim off the cream and put it in an antique glass churn with a hand crank. I don't recall if anything else was added, maybe salt. Been a long time.

several options for real butter here

we actually still have a anti margarine law but no store pays attention to it

it is Illegal in WI to sell colored Oleo aka margarine

at walmart there will typically be about 200 sq feet of space given to Margarine with 50+ useless to me products and about 3 square feet to actual butter where there will be 2-3 options

I only use butter , lard , peanut and olive oil

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

When I was a kid there was a dairy right down the road. The cows were Guernseys not Holsteins. They were fed corn silage and hay. They don't have near the amount of milk that holsteins have but twice the cream. We would skim cream off and put it in a quart jar. Just shake it to make butter. The cream that didnt turn to butter is butter milk. Tastes nothing like what they sell in grocery stores. Best biscuits and pancakes are made with that stuff.

They put olive oil or whatever in commercial butter to make it spread better for people to lazy to warm it up a bit.

you can buy 100% butter here in any grocery store. it tastes fine to me

Land o Lakes is pretty good. I like to use it more for spreads. Cooking butters Ill use about anything. Usually the unsalted variety or you can run into some oversalting in some recipes.

I would if I could use the total output of a milk cow and calf.

We use butter for almost all of our cooking but a gallon of milk lasts a good while unless the grands are here. And I'm not about to learn cheese making.

The calf wouldn't be an issue though as we do eat beef.

That and I ain't got the land to feed a cow/calf.

Salt is sometimes added to help it clump up.
But it isn't nessary.

We are fortunate in WI there is butter availble in all the stores we shop at.
When a kid with the one cow (Holstein) We drank a lot of milk with 6 kids. We would skim off the cream and store until we had a 2 quart jar about 3/4 full or a bit more. We would then take turns turning and shaking while listening to the radio etc. We then had butter and butter milk for pancakes and waffles too! We did not add any salt or coloring. We just used it as butter fat. We use a lot of lard too when we butchered the hogs.Made a lot of doughnuts with lard.

That's the butter we buy. We mostly cook with lard. We both just had our cholesterol checked and we both had low cholesterol.

Last time was 30 years ago when we had a dairy. Today it's a lot less work to drive 0.5 miles to the store and buy in bulk when it's on sale.

And I can remember as a kid my parents driving the family from Milwaukee to the Wisconsin/Illinois border to buy a couple of cases of margarine.

I'm kind of partial to Brown Swiss as dad had one when I was a kid. Can't recall the butterfat content but I do know that the best milk comes straight from the tap. And I liked her fuzzy ears.

Some young doc somewhere would have a conniption fit over that today.

Margerine is vegetable oil and you dont want to eat that stuff. Makes your joints ache, its poison for humans. In fact if you put it on the ground nothing will eat it.
Sadly it is added to much of the commercial foods made nowadays, peanut butter is full of it as are most other foods.

For cooking eggs, I use butter/, olive oil, for deep fry oil, I use lard, I rendered my moose fat this year and, its real good. Beef tallow is good, I also save bacon grease and use that.

Bear would be good too.

Brown Swiss have a high butter fat/cream % can't remember how much , but some holstien dairy farmers added a few to their herd to up the fat content or cream whatever you want to call it.

The best butter in the Midwest is made by 3 people, 3 miles from my house. The Hope Creamery, in Hope,MN. It is noticeably better than standard butters.
