Firemen knock on a man's door. "Hey buddy, there's a flood coming, we need to evacuate" The man looks at the Firemen and says, "Don't worry about me, the Lord will provide".

The water gets up to the second floor and while the man is standing in the window, the Sheriffs department comes by on a boat. "Hey mister, it's time to evacuate"! The man shakes his head and says,"The Lord will provide".

Water rises to the roof and while the man is standing on his roof, a National Guard helicopter comes by and lowers a ladder. "Hey old man, climb up the ladder, it's time to evacuate"! The old man shakes his head and yells up at the copter,"The Lord will provide"

Finally, water gets above his roof and the man drowns.

The man meets Saint Peter at the gate and says,"Hey! What happened to the Lord providing"?

Saint Peter looks at the man and says," We sent the Fire Department, The Sheriffs Department, and the National Guard, what more do you want"!?!?

Really? Not even a giggle?

That one is so old that when my ol' granddad heard it the first time, he kicked the slats out of his crib.

I guess I never thought of this as a joke. More of a parable. I've seen people act like the man in the story who refused to be helped because help didn't look as they expected. I've also seen people who will sit at home and pray/wish/hope that the man would be helped, but won't get off their rears and act like the firemen and offer some help themselves.
