So I want to trap a weasel. We have them here. I’ve even picked up a road kill within a half mile of my house. Know people that have had them raid a chicken coop. But they’re few and far between

I’ve made some weasel boxes but the issue we have here is ants. Lord of ants. If you put raw meat in your trap there will be ants in it probably before you get out of site driving away from the property.

So my question is what to use other than raw meat. Just lure?

Weasel GLAND lure, I would suggest.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

You'll grow old checking traps. They are that uncommon.

@JBR, I am gonna try BCtomcat Dr recommendation. I had 4 weasel boxes out all year last year with different baits.....never got one hit besides bobcat trying.

Been trapping in southern GA since mid 70s. Have caught only 2 weasels. Both in the mid 80s. Both were clamped in 1.5 coilsprings....with zero pan tension. One in a dry swamp baited coon set. Other in a dirthole set on field edge. Both were long-tailed weasels.

A couple of years ago I asked what the total number of furbearers reported for the previous year (2019) was to DNR
There were 16 weasels and 44 mink for the state

I use big rat traps instead of long springs because I’m sure I’d catch a possum every other night if I did

I didn’t even know we had them. Never seen one of those or a mink. May not be in the SW portion of the state. I’d think I’d see one dead on the road if there were.

Sit in any old out house at any old deer camp in the UP, MI and you just might meet a weasel up close.

Heck that isn’t too awfully far, not exactly close either. I actually cover up to that county for work.

Once when driving through downtown Woodbury GA one day and the car in front of me hit a mink. I’ve seen a couple of road kills within a couple of road miles of the house. Next door neighbor (also a trapper) got a road kill on top of the mountain at FDR. Friend of mines dad caught several on his chicken pen.
And I am told if you look closely when fishing behind West Point dam you’ll see them along the bank. Probably after the trillions of non native clams that are there now.

Only Georgia mink I've ever saw was at Kilkenny Marina near Richmond Hill, Ga. They were 2 mink under the fish cleaning station beside the boat slip eating fish parts. A few years ago a buddy brought me a male mink that he found dead in a crab trap in Camden County. I skint it and dried the pelt.

On another topic, the only muskrat I've ever seen alive was on Sapelo Island while bowhunting deer on the south end of island. The rat was swimming in a ditch and crawling in and out of water under my stand. Also saw a road-killed muskrat on St. Simon's Island causeway.

Swamp when I was a kid (1970’s) our farm ponds were infested with muskrats. We Finally cleaned them all out
This spring I was trying to catch a bank beaver in one of our ponds. Went and checked the trap one day—-muskrat. Checked my camera and i had a couple more swimming around. If they’re still around I’m going to whack them next month.

The only other one I saw in my whole career that I remember was at the Franklin river bridge in West Point lake.

Southern muskrat sells the same as Northern muskrat, may be worth it to keep a breeding pair. I lived in GA for a good long while and never saw a muskrat. They also eat so good.

One weasel seen and two live mink one roadkill.

We do have mink but they are not often seen but if you got a sharp eye and know where to look finding their scat isn't that difficult.
