Wow, I can't believe the cost to get electric ran to your places. That's definitely not something I thought of.

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

They told me 15 k to my cabin. But it has an abandoned line to it and they left the Transformer gerrm box back 60' from the cabin. They said if the that old line would not hold up once energized and a new underground line would Ned to be ran. I looked into it and everything from the Transformer to the pole I'd the powered company's responsibility so other than the electrician to put in the panel it will cost me nothing.

That price to run electric would be a deal breaker for me. Lugnut that looks like a good part of my lane. Hills aren't steep enough and no limestone to be had for over 100 miles. Our clay gravel just don't pack down and interlock like limestone.

Me too drifter, that's crazy and I sure didn't think of that when estimating cost.

Mine was supposed to be $11,000, the field engineer did me a major favor and got it down to 8k. We're also on sand which makes for easy trenching.

In today's world, just double what you think you can do it for and you'll still be a tad low.

There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

I think that's good advice hippie. Just looking in to material cost and I'm blown away.

Gary, I'm not sure of the sq ft of that house in the pic, I think it more then 200sqft and it's a famous house that I always liked. It's the birthplace of someone famous. I'll give ya a hint. Thank you, thank you very much. grin

We started putting three phase into the farm the three transformers on the pole were 10000, you couldn’t get a pad mount transformer and all transformers are hard to get, 200 feet of 350 mc aluminum 8 wires was 15000, the panels and breakers was another 15000, and we’re not done the electrician can get the rest and has no idea how long it’s going to be.

Nailed it Keith.

I know this is very naïve but I thought the electric companies ran it to the home for free because they would gain a paying customer. Reckon the WPA ended lol.

No, but I would. I really don't care how it looks, style, etc. All I care about is the cheapest way to build a small house that's dry and warm in the winter. I plan on using as much used stuff as I can.

The best low priced house is a modified earth home, single story ranch built into the hillside, grade level across the front, using ICF's and energy heel trusses, you can build this house quick, fast and in a hurry. You should be able to heat it with a candle. For a floor plan just google ranch house and your square footage.

Just the right amount of whelm.

Would be my last choice if you take the walls all the way to the ground. My first house I bought is an A frame. No windows except on the end walls, and the Walls slant so no over head cabinets in the kitchen and a wall ic close to your face when at the sink. The kitchen light is in the ceiling behind you when your at the counter so you were always working in shadows.

After several years I put a new roof on and cut a hole in the kitchen 4' wide and put in a dormer with window and an over head light above the sink. It made it better but the design sucks to live.

Have you looked at shipping container houses, how much Sq ft do you want?

I was gonna say A frame for a smaller place too.You can make a loft inside for storage/extra space.

It was a surprise to me, but it is clearly the Swiss Chalet.

I was on business in Venezuela, working for a Swiss owned company. My contact down there told me of a new community of Swiss chalets, near one of our projects. He took me over there to show me.

There was a couple dozen local families living in used shipping crates labeled "Made in Switzerland".
