I didn't want to hi jack 330s thread about apples but I do want to order 20+ various fruit trees for spring. Starkbros is my old go to but it's $37 per apple tree now.

Wondering if anyone has a cheaper but quality alternative?

Take a look at St Lawrence Nursery, in Potsdam ,NY. But grafted trees are expensive. Last fall I went to my local Tractor supply store in Oct.. They had a mess of potted apple trees that they did t sell all summer and I negotiated a better price. I purchased trees for $10 that were listed for $36. Just make sure you check what zone they are for.

Always consider the smaller local nurseries. They often do a better job of matching rootstocks/varieties to local conditions.

Do what Squash said. I did it with apple trees and blue berry bushes. The nurseys don't want to winter over if they can sell them.

There are a couple Amish greenhouses not far from where I live. They have excellent trees for $25, nicer than any I ever got in the mail.
Like said above sometimes you can get a good deal on leftovers.

You shouldn't have worried about hi jacking the other thread. Just Don't order trees from Gurney s. They're tiny branches that die.
And they used to sell good trees.

Thank you all, I think I'm going to order a few trees that would be hard to find locally and try and find the rest locally.

When I've found trees locally in the past they were not really cheaper but they are larger and of better quality. Hard part is that I get so busy in the spring I never have time to go get trees.

Thanks, I'll come back to this thread towards spring and look into all the locals mentioned. The problem is in the spring I have 0 time, I go from not working in the winter right into 80 hour weeks and I keep telling myself I'll find trees locally but never manage to make the time to do it.

I've ordered from them several times and I will be again this year. They have different sizes but I buy the small ones. They're small, but healthy. I ordered 2 trees from Stark bros last year and one's died already. If you're looking for cheap trees Willis is hard to beat, but if you do order the small ones expect to get a 2-4' stick. But the stick will grow if you can keep the critters from eating it. I've never ordered the more expensive bigger ones so can't speak of their quality.
