For Commercial aviation, I just read a Harvard report that the odds of a plane crashing are 1 in 1.2 million. Another report says that to be involved in a plane crash and die you would have to fly everyday of the year for 22,000 years. Those are excellent odds.

I've been on a couple scary commercial flights, one in Alaska and one in northern Thailand, lots of sketchy supercub and other light aircraft flights, but crashes in light aircraft are generally survivable; except for mid-air collisions, those generally don't end well. I just figure if I didn't fly I wouldn't be able to do what I like to do; so I fly and don't think about it.

I love flying. I got my private pilot's license while in college, went into USAF shortly after. I quit counting flight time after 10,000 hours. I love the feeling of being able to smoothly maneuver in 3 dimensions. My favorite type of flying is formation. I love the feeling that comes with proficiency, where you feel like you're wearing the aircraft rather than sitting in it. I could go on and on...
But I hate flying on the airlines! Big cities, rat-race terminals, TSA, sandwiched in back between fat/smelly/gassy/coughing/rude/sick/loud people. I don't want to ride in any aircraft I ain't flying myself.
Certainly, there is risk in flying. Lots of trial, error, and innovation has gone into making it safer, and it is safer, but not completely safe. These I consider the most dangerous aspects of flying, whether private, commercial or military (combat excluded).
#1 getting smeared by a drunk/distracted/high/aggressive/texting driver on your way to/from the airfield #2 an unseen, unknown mechanic incorrectly reinstalls/reassembles some critical part on the aircraft that then fails at the worst possible time.
I occasionally jump seat on Alaska Airlines, and have had many interesting chats with crew members. They appreciate polite, well-dressed, groomed passengers too.

I don't like height, but strangely enough I never had a fear of flying.
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.
