I have caught several cat by using a small tree for the cat rub station and a foot hold trap. I am thinking of using a snare suspended from the tree at the spot where the lure is. Similar to the way Asx sponsa does on his hog rub snares. Has anyone done this for cat.

I sure hope some of the guys that like using rub sets for cats chime in. Even if they only use footholds, I’d still like to hear if they think it would be effective or what problems they think might happen. Good idea Greg

Paloduro, Jameson, weiser, Wayne, Steinmeyer, USMC47 what are your thoughts on using a snare for a tree rub set for cats?

It should work, if hung right

I think I am going to play around with this for the next couple months. We have plenty of the worthless cats here, and I like a good challenge.

Do you guys look for a tree that the cats already rub or do you use the right lure & create a situation that a cat would be attracted to?

What I do is get in an area that I know there should be a cat coming thru, and pick out a small ( usually Pine ) sapling and peal they bark off with my knife just a small strip so that the white under the bark show at about the height of the cat. Some people will tie a strip of burlap instead of pealing the tree. Then just put some serria Mist from Jamison or Back breaker lure on the tree in the pealed area and bed the trap tight. I always want the tree that I pick to stand out a little. that means that it sticks out by itself toward the trail or old road a little and be by itself. If you do not have that you can always cut one and transplant it where you want it. It does not need to be real big around, I like them no bigger than I can reach around with one hand.

Either way or if it's not completely frozen I will plant a post where I want it.

To the OP, foot holds work perfectly so I have not seen a need to change.

All them guys are better trappers than I am, but here is what I think. At the rub the cat slows down and likely purrs.
He is in no hurry. My snaring percentages shot up when Big Shane taught me to set snares in open ground where and animal is moving fast (not time to notice a snare and refuse it). Locklear learned that from some hog trappers and made a video about it.

That being said, I think a rub is so attractive to a cat it could probably be done. It might take some time to work out the kinks, but it could be done.

I've dabbled trying to snair cats at a rub with poor success. If any one has figured out how to consistently I would like to hear. I've snared two hanging two snairs off each side of a small tree with the lure on the back, the snairs were fenced so it was more like a cubby both cats were Tom's at the same location.

The problem I can see with a snare in that situation is the cats slowing down, looking, investigating. None of which are typically good behaviors to be going on right AT the snare.

Now if the snare is even just a few feet away from the attraction, it would be better I would think. Get em coming or going.

You can make a funnel (snare at each end) or fairly extensive fencing, likely with several more than 2 snares. A thick sapling patch can work well. Hang something in there, fox carcass and wing with castor etc, and set several snares while doing a bit of blocking. I would say funnels maybe 3-5' long and thickets maybe 10-15' around.

Bobcats are fun to snare. I'm just curious as to what type of snare/snare support you plan on using? Myself I prefer 1/6 7x7 cable for a bobcat snare!

This is an old post that was brought back up. But I did play around with it that year, I did not catch anything.

I concur with this conclusion having been very successful using it for many years and often catching 2-3 cats (lynx) on a check.

Just seen this post, been coughing my toenails out for near two weeks. Ain’t much I can add from Boone and BC’s follow up. When a cat is slowed down, they see and notice everything! Good post, Boone!

I have not mounted any snares on a rub tree or object. I am very successful with using traps and do not like to have the rub set site burned out so to speak from one catch.

I have caught 5 cats from an exceptional good rub location over the years. Many rub sets have produced 2--3 cats in a week.

I set a trap (1-2 at times) with cable extensions at the rub object and place at least two or more blind forced trail sets approaching and leaving a primary rub location tree or rock out cropping, log end etc.

I try to keep my hang up / catch areas 8-10 ft or more away from good trails and my rub object. I select my locations with this in mind. Most of the time it has panned out well.

Too much disturbance on these trails from catches can cause hang ups I have found. Too much animal odor and interest there for others to linger and not keep moving thru as you would like.

Thank your for sharing your wisdom Bob Jameson. I agree my rub posts are my best producing cat sets with foothold traps so I would be reluctant to change anything at all

I haven't found any trees that Bobcats are rubbing but I'll try to create such a set
