Every time I open a jar of canned meat of any type, there is always a fart laying on top of the meat waiting to be released. It only takes a few seconds for it to dissipate but it sure stinks for those couple seconds.

Why do you think there is always that few seconds of stink in the jar of wonderfulness?

It’s just giving you a preview of what it’s gonna smell like on the way out. OSHA made them start doing that so it wouldn’t throw you into shock later on. eek

High canning temps break down sulfur-containing proteins which releases hydrogen sulfide gas.

This is as good an answer as any.
Potatoes have a strange smell when first opened also.

I do believe that they actually do have someone fart in every bag of potato chips.
Fortunately its just like most of mine. Pungent, yet not overbearing...
That may be my retirement plan.
