Good morning a friend shot a wolf this year while deer hunting be has /had a wolf tag. We were told by the Warden during the registration process that the CITES tag need to be obtained ahead of time??? The bottom line the tag is now in hand the warden has the wolf in the freezer the tag will be sent to the warden so he can attach it. Does anyone know of a taxidermist in the dryden area that can send it out for tanning or should we just make the trip in the spring and get it then. We're worried about freezer burn. I've never seen such a silly way of doing things.

You're fine on freezer burn...wouldn't worry about that.

Cites paperwork has to be done before it can cross the border(any international border) -tanned or not.
You should have done the cites paperwork at the time it was harvested and taken it home with you at that time.
Sounds like the GW is going out of his way to do you a big favour, probably because he is on good terms with the outfitter.
Your outfitter should have made the arrangements for you to be able to do this.
Many trappers here supply raw fur pelts like lynx and wolves to outfitters for their US clients to bring back home when their bear hunt or fishing trip is done.
Pretty straight forward.
Your best bet would be to go get it and bring it across .

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

That should be clear in the regs. Doesn't sound right to me - getting a CITES tag before an animal is taken. If so, why isn't the CITES tag given out with the wolf tag? I'd be checking the regs myself and not just what DNR publishes but what the legislature passed.

We did this hunt on our own. The wolf was harvested and 2 hours later he had it at the office of the warden. That's when he was told it would take 3 weeks to get the tag ? I never heard of the tag not being available at the time of registration. The warden was helpful enough and agreed to keep it until the tag arrived. I know others who have harvested a wolf registered it and brought it home at the end of the hunt. We're afraid it we have him ship it to us it will get held up somewhere and thaw and go to (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) before he receives it.

Something doesn’t sound right. I used to hunt spring bears with a friend in Quebec. Back then I needed the cites paperwork to bring the bear back to the states. When I killed a bear, the warden pulled a tooth a the ZEC gate house and filled out the Cites paperwork and gave it to me.
Granted, I was hunting in a ZEC, so maybe that’s why I received better service from the GW ?

You do not need the CITES tag until you cross the border with it. Someone is giving out bad information. You can get a CITES tag at the bait shop in Fort Frances.

With a provincial export permit he could have taken it International Fur dressers in Winnipeg and had it tan and they would have done the paper work
Dryden to Winnipeg is not far to go
