I struggled for 26 years to learn the craft but it was worth it.

Not knocking that shot because I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that unless shooting off a very good rest but you can do that with an $800 gun in the old 270 if you have ability to make the shot. A one moa rig is plenty good enough for deer at 400 yards

and that was a close one for what I can do, just finished up the rifle I hope to one day take a whitetail at 1 mile, at present my farthest is .77 mile. my farthest with a 270 is 606 yards.

What bullets are you running for the most part ? Looking into the Berger hybrids as a upgrade from the elds I'm using right now .
Also what's your preferred shot placement at those distances?

I run Bergers or accubond LR's, ELD's are just an Amax with a better BC, not a bad bullet as long as the impact velocities are 3200 or less

Some of those guys out west have lose the ways of the old. 30-30 was fine for 70 years, nothing changed, we just got lazy and didn't want to get up, close and personal with the animals. Long live the 1894! I agree with Yes Sir!

I build a lot of custom rifles in not so popular cartridges here in Virginia for customers from here. The guys that are having a custom rig built have plenty of rifles already and want something different and something they will squeeze just a little more out of

Slow down that ELD to 2700-2900 and it’s a fantastic hunting bullet. I shoot the 143 grain, 178 grain, and 200 grain in 3 calibers, all ELDx . Accurate and great internal damage

But I’m not from the West so guess it doesn’t count crazy

There are calling contests every weekend all winter out here, I’d love to see you consistently “get up close and personal” with your 30-30 and show us how it’s done. It’s not a matter of getting lazy, but ballistically the 30-30 is one of the worst centerfire calibers you could choose for predators.

I’ve been shooting “long range” for 25 years.

I enjoy it.

Is it hunting? Not in my opinion.

But, I don’t consider shooting big game with a modern rifle at any distance “hunting”. Just my opinion. I like my big game close and with a 500 grain stick run through em.

I shoot coyotes at long range purely out of necessity. With every chump with a foxpro and a thermal blaring away 24 hours a day from November on, getting coyotes “close” gets a mite tough by Christmas time. But even than, a true “long range” shot is pretty rare, I can almost always get a little closer with some thought. And, killing coyotes for me isn’t recreating. And sometimes can be downright serious business.

You can buy all the toys and gizmos, but there’s no substitute for rounds down range in field conditions. You can’t buy that.

I run custom guns because the off the shelf factory stuff is a crap shoot, and a reliable high end factory gun costs as much as a custom. A custom rig I’m getting exactly what I want.

I’ll date myself a little.

I was shooting long range back when reticles and turrets didn’t match and you had to do conversions!!!

Lol

I got a 30-30. I use it every year to butcher a beef. One of the only guns I got without a scope. Lol
I have a friend that loves to long distance shoot. Spends lots of money on his guns and loads and shoots alot. He makes fun of me all the time. I can't shoot long distance at least not very accurately. I don't practice. My 223 zero dead on at 125 yards. I hardly ever miss anything I shoot under 200 yard. When I'm out trapping I don't shoot unless I'm gonna kill it. Why scare them off.
So here a story. My buddy brings out his fancy I don't even know what. Shooting targets at 500 yards turret scope dials up to 20 power or something. Yes it's expensive and cool. We are driving across my pasture back to the house. Coyote jumps up and crosses right in front of truck at a lope. He all excited almost falls out if pickup... And misses. I shot it with my trusty 223. Stepped it off. 47 steps. So under 50 yards. He will never live it down!! I might hit them at 500 but when one pops up beside the truck I don't miss it either.

Any reason for that?
Thanks

Not a thing wrong with a 7-08 that’s what I bought my daughter. Plenty of gun for elk. No wildcats here I typically pack a 264 win mag. I have a lot of friends with wildcats 6.5x284, 280AI, etc. nothing wrong with that stuff. I did rename my nephews 6.5 creed to “the need more” after last weekend’s cow elk hunt. It took 3 well placed shots at about 125 yards with a 143 ELDX to put her on the ground. The recovered bullets didn’t impress me at all. I won’t be loading any ELDX bullets for my personal use. Just my opinion I know plenty of others that use them.

One of the reasons is that more people in the west like to do it for a hobby. People in the west are much more into guns than easterners. We have the open space with lots of places to shoot. Myself it never interested me. I can find better things to do that I enjoy a lot more.

I can track, stalk and get within I would say 15 yards of any animal in North America. Its extremelly time consuming and mentally exhausting but even in the eastern woods with crunchy fall leaves I can do it. Yes if we are talking about ballistics I agree and for that reason my main rifle is 6.8 SPC II. However 30-30 is a tried and true for every animal in North America.

If you just kill one wolf at 800 yards it’s worth it. I have a friend that does it pretty consistently.

Tell your friend to quit being so lazy and just stalk up to 15 yds of the wolves and shoot them with a .30-30 like MattLa.

If it were only so easy,,,they tend not to sit around waiting for someone to sneak up on them around here.

When I moved out here many years ago I noticed the local Kmart type store offered .223 and 22-250 on their on sale guns never seen those offered back East. Out here they are a pretty all around truck gun so they fill the need for this area.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!
