I recently was shown how to use cable restraints by a guy down the road and I really like the simplicity of it, and the low cost up front vs buying dozens of coyote traps, dying and waxing.

I should just plan on buying a few dozen as this would last me all season I'm sure. But, I am a tinkerer and I also like the idea of building my own. I know in the long run it would be cheaper , but to buy the supplies and a bench swager it would be a bit of an investment up front.

I like that I could also build my own earth anchors and if I need a few cables could just go build a few vs ordering and waiting for them to ship.

Has anyone else built them? My biggest worry is getting them loaded right as the pre made ones I bought so far seem pretty slow and tear dropped.

I've built a lot of them. I used to sell snares. I always suggest people buy good ones for the first couple years, all the while saving the reusable components. At that time you just need the cable and minimal supplies to build your own. There's a guy who sells Road Runner Snares that you can look up to buy good loaded CR's and Newt at www.snareone.com can hook you up with the good stuff too! As for the ones you already have that are "pretty slow and tear dropped". You can load them yourself to make them work better. I'll post a video on how I do it. Also you can use a hammer to pound your stops and ferrules, you don't have to have a bench swagger, but you'd love the swagger if you got one. Click here you don't have to spend a fortune on one.

Something else I've learned from beav, 1x19 3/32 cable is a great choice of cable for CR's to reduce chewing out of the snares when held alive for a few hours overnight.
