Bought a fisher permit this years I will be off work for the entire 2 week season for the first time ever.

Planning either simple dirtholes or cubbies with Bridger 1.65's. Have a bottle of Gusto.

Question 1: Bait down the hole ?? I've heard some sort of meat along with grape jelly ?? Dunno........

Question 2: Since Gusto smells so rank of skunk......would it be any advantage if I got a skunk in one of my canine sets to leave the carcass somewhere very near the fisher set as an attractant ??

Fisher are not hard to catch as they are an opportunistic hunter/scavenger that prey on a wide variety of animals including hares, grouse, squirrels, birds and their eggs, berries, mice and voles and CARRION thus will respond to most baited and lured sets. Venison, moose and beaver are excellent bait for them with beaver being my preference. You just need to be on location and have PATIENCE as they may take several weeks to complete their circuit.

Elevated BG trap box sets are the most common method of harvesting fisher. [Linked Image]

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

And if you have a 2 week season set on older fisher sign. They often will have a 2week + circuit.

Nothing like seeing a big dark male applehead hanging from a marten box as you approach through the snowy bush..

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Be nice........... But PA prohibits the use of body grippers except in a watercourse. Even if the trap is in a cubby box.

I made a few sets earlier this season just to scratch the itch. I find fisher love to follow trails so I usually make dirthole sets right alongside such trails. This year I had some used Backbreaker leftover from a couple seasons ago and found a pint of ADC's Predator Payback that's been floating around my fur shed for a good ten years or so. Got a female fisher on the first check.

I think castor attracts them just as well as skunk essence and castor can certainly travel through the air, especially if rubbed on a tree a few feet above your set.

Disclaimer: I am a very unsuccessful fisher trapper
I’ve tried just about everything. I like double dirt holes with beaver for bait and a lure in the other hole. For lure I mostly use castor and violater 7. I always use a call lure, mostly skunk but sometimes anise. They seem to be attracted to skunk smell. I’ve also used boxes with an overhang with a foothold. I use anything from 1.5s to #2s. Make sure ya put a rock on the box in case they jump on top. This year I’m trying a couple cubby boxes in the swamp with a conibear. I have a pan trigger and will be using a beaver quarter for bait. Went on a scouting trip yesterday and no sign in sundays snow. I’m mostly worried about todays weather. I’ve heard anywhere from 4-14” snow with some ice too.
Hope ya have better luck than I do

I have caught fisher late in the season at canine dirt holes. Use a big chunk of bait and your Gusto. Get out and find old fisher sign and set right in there tracks. They will be back.

As far as using the skunk as an attractant.....try it. I once buried a skunk that had not sprayed and by the tracks in the snow, I saw where a fisher came along and dug it up. It managed to make it stink then. Try burying it shallow and making a set on top of it maybe.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!
