Any body trap there? I’ve got some land I’ve been invited to trap that I bear hunt on and the regulations in someways seem clear as mud

State regs say snares can only be used for beaver, but in the county fox regs it states snares can be used for fox, does county law trump state law? And in the county fox regs it states in the 1987 change only 1.5 footholds can be used, but later says any steel trap with chain up to 18inches. Another thing is some of the more local guys told me it was all out illegal to trap coyote there due to the red wolf but I’ve not been able to find that in print.

What I’d like to do is run a fox, coyote and cat line down there just to trap another state and some new ground, just don’t want to end up in the wrong

Beaufort county is a good one to do that in. Here's the regulation as it pertains to fox trapping in that county. Deer season goes out January 2, and you can start fox trapping on January 3rd. There's no limit on foxes, plus this is one of the very few counties you can use snares. The vast majority of the counties let you use snares on beavers only. https://www.ncwildlife.org/Portals/0/Hunting/Documents/Fox/FXSEA2022_updated-8-10-22.pdfS.L. 1997,c.132, as amended by S.L. 2001, c. 19 - Authorizes the trapping season for foxes from the day after the close of gun deer season until February 28 of each year. Eliminates the bag limits on hunting or trapping foxes and raccoons and the requirement to tag foxes prior to or after sale. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, foxes and raccoons may be taken during any trapping season established by the Wildlife Resources Commission or by the provisions of this act with steel-jaw or leghold traps with trap chains of up to 18 inches in length. It is lawful to use snares when trapping fur-bearing animals during seasons for trapping furbearing animals as established by the Wildlife Resources Commission and by the provisions of this act.State regulation on foothold traps.... https://www.eregulations.com/northcarolina/hunting/trapping-regulationsFoothold Traps: Must be smooth edged and without teeth or spikes. Jaw Spread: To measure jaw spread of a foot-hold trap, measure from inside jaw to inside jaw (across the open trap from across the dog to the opposite jaw). Cannot have a jaw spread greater than 7 ½ inches. If the jaw spread is between 5 ½ and 7 ½ inches, the jaws must be offset by 3/16th of an inch. The jaws do not have to be offset if the trap is set in water with a quick-drown type set. Chain length: Trap chain cannot be longer than 8 inches from anchor point to the base of the trap unless fitted with a shock-absorbing device with at least 40 lbs. and not more than 75 lbs. of pull. Trap chain can be measured from anchor point (solid ground) to the base of the trap.

You can't hunt them without a depredation permit. If you accidentally shoot one hunting coyotes, there's not bringing it back. If you trap one, it can be released. You may want to contact the warden that county just to be sure, because it just says taking of coyotes.
A Coyote Hunting or Coyote Depredation Permit is required for the taking of coyotes on private lands in the counties of Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington.
In the counties of Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington, coyote hunting on public lands is prohibited, except coyotes may be taken on state-owned game lands by the holder of this permit and a NCWRC-issued permit or license for a specific permit hunt opportunity for coyotes as authorized by G.S. 113-264(d).
These permits do not authorize access to any property, public or private; and are non-transferable.
In all other counties of North Carolina, coyotes may be taken on private lands anytime day or night; and on public lands without a permit from the hours of one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset, and with a permit from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise.

Thanks Paul. I’ve watched more grey fox down there than I have anywhere in the country. It’s only about a 3.5hr drive from here and I have a place to stay, hard to say no to.
