My woolrich pants are going to be parked for a while (too ill fitting and heavy ). I am not worried about getting wet at this time as I am close to home .What are you in the north country wearing if you are choring in the unheated barn and shop but in the wind too . I have plenty of coats and upperware .I am not really partial to bibs but maybe . I had 3 pairs of long johns under my woolies yesterday to be out all day and be comfortable .(peeing is REAL challenge ).

Cheap rubber or plastic rain gear. It completely cuts the wind. It is amazing how much warmer you stay.

Get some Wrangler insulated pants. They are much easier to walk in than the Walls or Carharts. They do not bind on your thighs. They are plenty warm with a decent pair of long johns under them. I wear them all winter long.

you could use a windproof layer, it would hold body heat in also.

AND, How sweaty you'll get!

I use them for ice fishing and stand hunting not much movement so I don't build up heat. To stay cooler you just wear less/lighter under layers.

"3 pairs of long johns"? Poly or cotton? Maybe you're too bound up, you want dead air space if possible.
Some of the yuppie stuff is actually really good for what you are describing; something like some OR (outdoor research) mountaineering pants, wind and somewhat water proof. A little spendy but worth it. Wear some poly long johns under it. and if it's really cold some fleece pants also.

Eddie Bauer or LLBean makes fleece lined jeans.

I have never found anything better than my wool pants, a medium weight pair of long johns and a pair of synthetic rain pants over the top. The rain pants cuts the wind, keeps me dry and the wool keeps me warm. Wool pants come in different weights and for working around the barn a light pair should be all you need.
That said, working outside and close to the house an insulated pair of Carhart bibs is tough to beat too.

Another vote for lined pants, I use the Fleet brand thinsulate lined ones, roomy enough to fit long underwear underneath for really cold days.

I also like the fit of the Wrangler lined jeans.

I did not car for the Carhartt lined jeans, they fit me funny and the denim wore through very fast..

Being from Texas I don't have a good grasp of the conditions you are working in so take this with that in mind

Wool base layer, fleece mid layer and outer layer to fit conditions is how I would start, then adjust from there.

For me, if outside, wind blocking outer layer is the key.

I was thinking the same thing, "3 pairs of long johns"??? That could impair/restrict circulation and make you colder not warmer. Makes me wondering how many socks is he wearing?

Nylon insulated fallers pants like the loggers wear is what I use. Like these, which I'm sure you can get cheaper on other sites https://www.labonville.com/shop/labonville-pant-lined-black-nylon-w-pockets-wn600p-49906#attr=13120,13619. Not good for welding though.

Pretty hard to beat the insulated bib overalls, I have a pair of Walls that are ancient and still good, you can also get a pair of "wind pants" or warm up pants that the skiers wear. Basically insulated nylon over pants, wind proof, and very light., cheap too.

I like a Merino base layer and just jeans or wool pants, with the bibs or foul weather gear I'm good for zero degrees with wind.

If the first layer is long johns type stuff, make sure it fits snug. Good ones are just that, get what you pay for. After that a layer or two with airspace as guys noted above. For hard work out I’m good with carhart bibs, unlined, but when new I run them thru the machine a number of times to loosen them up.

Guys mention some great products above but what I mention is for the dirty rough contact environment. Those carharts are nearly indestructible, slip them off hang um in the outer entry, ready for tomorrows beating.

Carhart work pants. The ones with the duck material. They are tough and are very wind proof. A light pair of long John’s underneath and your good.

Thanks to all of you who have offered advise . The legs on the woolies are like 5 gallon buckets I think I will get some lined pants . Most of you are like me and I deal with snow,grease ,hay,sparks and wind almost every day ,those lined pants probably fit better for what I am doing . thanks
