AJE, I like to wire them to trees, then wire pine boughs above them so buzzards don’t get at them. I wait until cats start hitting them then set traps. Recently I doubled on bobcats by throwing the carcasses off the back side of a pond dam where it was thick. I checked them every day until they were covered up then put two sets out and caught two cats

With season starting on the 26th then in that case I should probably get some of these beaver carcasses out now

That's what i do too. I can figure on average 1 cat and two civets per every 6-7 beaver carcasses I lay out in the woods. The rest get taken by long-tails, coyotes, hawks, vultures, etc. I don't bother to wire mine down. Cougars will break the wires anyway so why bother.

BTW, I think your dog getting gas from beaver meat is because their gut microbiome is screwed up from eating kibble. If you eased them into the beaver meat over time my bet is the gases will go away as the correct gut critters get going.

I'd wire them a couple of feet up off the ground

If you do wire them, do what Keets says. Get them visible

And that would help keep the coyotes off them smile

I probably should get these out ahead of time so the cats have time to find them. If I break them open a little they probably won't freeze totally solid

Of course we have exposed bait laws here I must adhere to

Is it a certain amount of feet away from a carcass? And what constitutes as exposed bait? After they start hitting them you can really cover them up and make them not visible

I think it's 25 ft away if they aren't covered. And I think the exposure is from above not from the side, but I should look into that to refresh myself

Sorry about the wife. Beaver is by far the best dog food there is. The last 7 dogs I've had would always pick beaver over any other kind of meat (including beef or chicken)....and never got sick on it. Their coat will pop like a chia pet, too. The only bad thing is they won't touch their foo foo dog food if they have the choice to eat beaver...and they will eat far less beaver than dog food.

Maybe negotiate with the wife: Cook it and add it to the dog food? Maybe a trial run until she sees the difference in the fur/health of the dog. It's noticeable.

Yes, you can sell beaver in MN. However I did have an upper management DNR woman sick the warden on me for selling it once as she said it was illegal. The C/O had to show her it was not. Figures.

Maybe there's another reason beavers were put on this earth.

Here's an idea that I thought of:

Cut a beaver carcass open a little and drag it in the snow. Then hope the Bobcat follows it to a set. I have to check our laws first because if it leaves a visible blood trail that might violate the exposed bait law.

I noticed the beavers I have are froze solid. I plan to use them for Bobcat trapping this week so I think I'll have to take an axe and open them up a little

Try eating some like it's the only thing you have.
You may be surprised at just how good beaver meat is.
There's a reason all predators will come to their meat.

I wonder what works better for trappers: a deer carcass or a beaver

Beaver carcasses are far more valuable on the trapline than any money you could get by selling them.

Good. I have a freezer full of beaver and will start bobcat & fisher trapping this week.

Some of the beavers I might ~quarter up with a hacksaw.
