Hi everyone,

I am based in NH and have a beaver to trap. I took my trapper ed class and got my license.

I have a situation where the landowner only wants me to use a live trap. I explained that I would still need to dispatch the beaver and they were perfectly fine with that.

That being said, I have some large cage traps I used for raccoons. The beaver is in a large agricultural pond and I have located the very wellcused slide its using to enter the pond.

Any suggestions on using a cage trap to catch a beaver? I was thinking of setting the trap adjacent to the slide and throwing some castor in behind the pan.

Probabbly wouldnt do it with the traps you get from the local hardware store. Most are a bit on the small side for beaver and not so sure I would trust them to hold a beaver.

When i have caged beaver, I basically do what your thinking, basically make a castor mound in the back, or on top of the back of the cage. If you can find some tight brushy trails coming out of the water, that would help getting around the small trap issue.

If you can use snares up there, I would try to talk the owner into letting them use those if they're opposed to footholds and 330s.

Is it building a castor mound? If it is I would set the cage trap on it so the mound is at the back of the trap and add your own castor inside. The bigger the better to get a beaver to go inside.Brush in the sides but not too tight.

I really like these traps with the pendulum trigger...

I just set them perpendicular to the shore on a farm pond using a mock castor set with lure, mud pie and some peeled sticks for eye appeal, pretty much the same as a foothold or snare.

These size cages work well on bobcat too.

Well I work for the city of Madison and we have to trap all the beaver alive when we remove them from city property. We use snares and It's very effective as long as you keep them up on dry land. The problem lies In getting a 60 Lb beaver In a NAFA sack. LOL.
But a large dog crate works pretty good. Most of the time the beaver will run right Into the crate.

They had a county guy In there before me and he tried live traps and had no succses. But then maybe he didn't know what he was doing.

I had 2 big Cages built by ADC back in 2007

On the banks edge with a castor mound in the back they worked well.

4 Fur,
I've been wondering how those beaver-sized cage ZTraps would work. Thanks for taking time to post reply.
