Being new, I do not have a trap basket yet. I have been working out of a 5 gallon bucket , with a bucket boss tool skirt on it. This works well for truck trapping which is what I do /anticipate doing the most of. But, there is a draw back. I do not have a topper, and the pack is too tall for my tonneau cover. So I need to carry it in the truck and I was concerned about scent, and also it likes to tip. I would also prefer to not have mud get on the seats from it. If I have to walk a ways which I will have to do st some point due to snow or mud, I suspect this would get old carrying.

I like the idea of the fiber pack where it would be easy to pack , but probably am right back to the height, scent and tracking in mud issue.

I also considered a hand pouch like the long narrow ones , I believe a Leggett style. Would work good to keep under tonneau cover and not tip, but probably harder to carry longer distance.

Any suggestions for a newbie?

You need to experiment because this is just one of those things that people can just have radically different opinions. How much are you walking is going to be the main factor atleast for me. I have a simple jansport backpack that I use for most of my loadup, and I will refill that depending on what spot I'm at. I also have what is known as a ALICE rucksack that I have a waterproof cover for. A pack basket would never be for me personally, but you might love it.

I almost never will have more than 5 traps with me when I am taking my backpack, but that is for setup. When I am just checking, I will have 1-2 traps of either #2 or #4, along with my pliers, j hooks, wire, lures, and some misc stuff. I have my hatchet, a beaver stick with a conibear bracket on it, and a single RGB 220 to dispatch the animal. It just depends on location and how many traps I am checking.

Im kinda partial to the montana beaver bags and andy weiser bags myself. My Montana bag is about to be retired after 20 years of service. It took a lot of a abuse in those 20 years. It'll still see some use nut probably not much as a everyday line bag anymore.

Try going with a tool bag and see if you like that. If so then you can upgrade. I use a cat litter pail with a smaller pail bolted on to use for bait and lures. Very seldom does it fall over in the back of my truck and I'm not concerned about scent control.

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

A smaller "cat litter" pail will fit in most rucksacks and will be shorter then a 5 gal pail if thats what you like.
