My kids take Brazilian jujitsu and kickboxing which is about as close to street fighting your going to get. Krav maga is another one to consider. I have a family member that is a Krav Maga instructor. There's a pretty humorous tale about him facing off with a BJJ competitor. Long story short... The BJJ guy complained that my family member "cheated"... My family member simply reminded him that in a fight for survival, there are no rules, no referees, and no 2nd place. Mike

If the kid knew how to fight, the aggressor probably wouldn't have messed with him. Also, if the kid knew how to fight, we wouldn't have just sat there. He would have popped up and been ready to defend himself.
And, not to turn this into a which martial art is better, but a decent middle school wrestler will smoke a decent middle school BJJ kid 9.8 times out of 10. This is my opinion only having watched thousands of wrestling matches, hundreds of BJJ and hundreds of Judo matches. Royce Gracie is a different story, but even the UFC is loaded with World Champions who were Division I wrestlers. Plus wrestling is less expensive.
All of them are better than nothing. Make them actually compete and not just practice.
In my opinion the more you know the better which is why my kids take both BJJ and kickboxing and eventually I want to get them in a Krav maga class.

Its pretty blatant that he doesnt know how to fight, or didnt want to. Its not a special skill set to try covering up after getting pummeled 12 times. Im trying to wrap my mind around why he didnt ? Maybe hes Butterbeans son and can take a hit or 25. Have you ever had your bell rung unexpectedly? The kid was most likely out of it after the first hit not counting the continued strikes. I have given a lot of guys more than they expected but i also have taken an unexpected hit to the side of my head that has been fractured and had 3 bad concussions. I flat got my head thumped and another concussion out of it. Probably not to far off from that kid. I turnd around into a hail marry right hook and I stayed vertical but had no idea what was going on as he keep thumping my head. It's easy to look at and make assumptions but I have been there and I was not able to think about defending myself or think at all . I guess a technical ko but not put to sleep. Don't forget today's climate. If the white kid had done anything at all he would end up in trouble. At most that kid attacking him gets suspended a few days maybe expelled. But most likely a slap on the wrist. Reverse the race and it would be on national news as a hate crime and the kids would be in juvenile detention and waiting to be tried as an adult.

While I don't disagree that enrolling your kids in some kind of martial arts program is a good idea, it's kinda sad it's come to that for Americans.
30 years ago every boy over the age of 7 knew how to fight, or learned real quick.

Yes both unexpectedly and expectedly. He just didnt look knocked out to me, his bell was definitely wrung though- Im probably wrong though. A little bit of defense would have went a long ways saving him some lumps and pain.

My 7 year old grandaughter is in Ju-Jitsu and is a natural. Her only problem is she thinks shes hurting her opponent and gets up off them and walks away before the match is over LOL Her nickname is Non and I call her Ana-Non- Da. I will try to get my daughter to post videos later this week when I see her. It’s a a fairly common thing with girls and even adult women, I have trained more then a few in basic and not so basic self defense and can’t begin to count how many times I have seen them stop when they think they might have hurt who they are sparing with, it can be a liability if it ever comes down to the real thing and should be addressed by the instructor, but then again I have seen a few times when a young woman I have been working with has had to put that training to a real world test and and even though in training she would stop and ask if her sparing partner was ok after landing a blow ect when it came to real world application of it took it all the way home
