I am trying to get my PA fisher and having a hard time getting them to go in a box. Hard to see in the pics, I know, but the first pic has the fisher at the box and second he is on top of it. They know where it is, just not going in. The box is sloped slightly downhill due to lay of the land, and baited with beaver meat. Any suggestions? I am going to throw a couple foot traps there today but would still like to catch one in a box someday…..

I went and checked today and the dumb rookie (me) setting the traps forgot to take one of the safeties off the 160. It was pulled out of the box….and I thought I had a tough time getting him to commit before!

I presume you are using a BG trap with standard wire trigger.
Try a pan trigger setup as it provides an open entry space without any trigger wires in their face that may deter them from entering thru the trap.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Tony. Don’t feel too bad regarding the safeties. I do it once very few years. But my excuse is age. lol

You say your box opening is slightly declined downwards.
Make sure your trap is solidly stabllized in the box.Wide slots dont work for stabilizing the trap solidly.Narrow 1/4 inch slots will.
Keep in mind when an animal like a fisher works a box set he will be all over the outside of it and the tree before he goes in.
If your bodygrip is not solidly stabilized and he steps on a spring, your trap can tip,or fall out of the box, especially with a downward opening.
Just something to keep in mind when setting boxes.
if your box has wide slots and the trap is not solid, you can use a branch to accomplish it.Crank the springs up or down and pass one end of the branch thru one spring eye, then bend the branch under or over the box and crank the other spring eye over the other end of the branch while bending it up or down.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Thanks, I probably don’t have time to do this for this year but will try for next season. Appreciate the help.

I use pans on some of my body grippers with success. Last year I switched to 160's and I bent my triggers to shape of a T with them on the bottom. Had good luck with them also.

Not sure I’m understanding when you say in the shape of a T. You have a pic of that?

The trigger is on the bottom. Bend one wire sharp left and the other sharp right at the same height of the other. I would have to go dig one out of the shed to get a picture.

Nope, I get what you mean now. Was having fuzzy brain issues and couldn’t see it earlier. Thanks!

Do what BCTomcat says. Wood pans. Even I catch fisher, and we hardly have any!

Just doing what I want now.

Why wait till next season? Make your own pans now out of 3/8" plywood or corrugated plastic. [Linked Image]

I'd put a walnut-size chunk of meat just outside the entrance.(cover with leaves, lightly bury, etc) If he likes it, he'll want what's in the back of that box.
