My grandson is wanting a compound bow for target shooting. I know nothing about compounds, as all I ever shot was a recurve. I figure with y'all's vast knowledge in such things, you could give grandpa some advice.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

a good bow shop , because the right guy to set it all up is very important
there are a lot more bows with adjustable draw length that they can go teen to adult with well.
I have been out of the archery scene for a while , I took my son to the shop and got him fitted. for a thousands year old sport archery has changed more in the last 30 years than the previous 500.
sorry about the sticker shock
guns look cheap when you go bow shopping.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Mathews Genesis. It will grow with him. A great starter bow to learn the basics and he can shoot that until he's ready to get something serious and start hunting.
I BELIEVE IN MY GOD, MY COUNTRY AND IN MYSELF.

Bear Cruzer G2. Complete set-up for $350 on Amazon. I bought one for my aging Father so he could adjust the weight down as his shoulder gets worse. From short draw lengths to long, heavy draw weights to light. This covers all of them.
I will gladly feast on those who would subdue me.

Another vote for a GOOD bow shop. Service matters WHEN it needs string, cables, the correct arrows, tips, etc. Like other gear, they are not good out of the box forever. Buy a few tickets to their indoor range and break out the recurve and youns head over after Christmas, big fun.
Fortunate to have one here that is active PTA and displays this in the shop.
Next year, after he knows all, he can set up his own, or stay with a pro.

So I looked up the Matthews Genesis and it says the draw weight is only 20lbs? Seems like a good bow for an 8 year old but 13???
I got my first compound bow at 13 and it was 35lb-50lb. I shot it at 35lbs for a few weeks but by the time summer was over and season was here I was up to shooting it at 50lbs. 20lbs seems way too weak to me??
The Diamond Edge, while more expensive looks like a much better option being adjustable from 7-70lbs and 15-30" draw length... really something he can grow into.
