Just bought one incase the power goes out. Can it be used inside of a cabin or home hooked to a small propane tank?
Or is it best to used the little camping bottles? It will not be on when sleeping or away from home/ cabin.
Thank you, Sarge

Yes, inside. They have an oxygen shut off sensor but you're wise to not run it unattended or while asleep. You want the hose, an inline filter and 20lb or larger tank(s). Run the hose out a window, tanks always go outside.

You'll burn through those little bottles at a rate of one or two per day. If you insist on the small bottles get the 20lb tank and the adapter to refill the little ones.

Save the little bottles for when portability is priority.

Also, the orifices are bad to foul and clog. Q-tips and acetone are your friend.

I wouldn’t use it inside a house. Carbon monoxide is a serious threat, and the chances of that thing blowing up and catching fire is way to high to have in my home.

Google what ice fishermen have gone through in their ice shacks with those things. Not worth the risk.

I’d buy a winter jacket, some ski pants, winter boots, gloves, and a touque if I was you in SOUTH CAROLINA!!

Is that any different than a gas water heater in the closet?

They claim you can use them inside, and they do have a O2 shutoff, I used one at my hunting camp with a 20 lb tank and long hose, it was good for less then severe cold nights. We did have a carbon monoxide alert thingee.

I never had a problem with mine, also the cabin was vented....YMMV.

A good friend lost his son last winter to a generator. He was a trim carpenter and was working where the electricity was not yet turned on. A small generator got him in the prime of life.

They're advertised as being "indoor safe" with a low oxygen shutoff. The oxygen has to get pretty low to shut them off, like dangerously 'can barely keep a candle lit kind of low. But they do put off carbon monoxide which is nothing to mess around with.

Depending on the model you got, they can burn through some serious propane, especially if you're running them in something large like a house trying to keep it comfortable. They also produce a lot of condensation. They're made for things like duck blinds, deer stands and ice shanties. The more sealed the enclosure is, the more likely you won't wake up.

Not trying to burst your bubble, but a small propane heater like that would be the last thing I would put in my house to keep it warm. Don't want to hear about you on the news.

you would be better off with a small genny running outside and a cord to an inside oil filled electric radiator.

I would get a separate co2 detector and go for it. Shouldn’t be a problem for just temporary heat to keep things from freezing.

The smallest buddy heater will only run 4-6 hours on a 1 pound tank, putting off negligible heat in anything other than a small room (less than 100 sq ft) and there again you run a risk of CO poisoning in a small enclosed area.

We had an outage that lasted 3 days with temps around zero. Ran two of the old style sunflower Mr. Heaters in our house the entire time for heat and cooking. It was a tiny house at just over 900 SQ ft. Kept the two rooms we occupied at about 65 degrees and the pipes from freezing. The house wasn't overly tight, but not drafty. Nobody got sick or keeled over. Get a carbon monoxide detector and go for it, I say.

My little heater for duck hunting has a feature for heating, then tip it over and the element points up to cook on!

You can just hook a paint roller screen on the handle for a cooking surface.

I definitely need a back-up plan this last storm we were out of power for 2-1/2 days with sinking temperatures... I'm looking at Mr. Heater type options but heating larger square footage and the grill tanks only last about 8 hours on low. Looking into the Generac Power Pac that would run off my 1,000-gallon LP tank- I already have the transfer switch wired into furnace and a few other circuits. Cost is around $2k

Inside a house I would use a kerosene heater. They are made for that purpose. The fire hazard is significantly less because all the really hot parts are enclosed. It is too easy to get a propane heater too close to something flamable and have it catch fire. I use both in my shop. The propane is great because you can point it at where you are working and get the radiant effect.

Unless you need the portabilty of a Mr buddy type heater there are many makers of wall mounted propane heaters specifically designed for interior heating that run off of household natural gas or external propane tanks.
