how can we do all these things any more , it is in fashion to be a victim these days , you can't very well be a victim and make everything you do someone elses emergency.

it gets better the farther north you go but southern Wisconsin isn't that far north any more , Wausau might be

Actually, this is what I expected and feared

Buzzard maybe it isn't as bad as down south yet , 1-3 inches you better still be on time to work.

depending where you work you really need to be on time every day.

schools close a more than they did probably not a lot more , at the same time roads are busier and people want to drive faster because they don't think ahead or leave early and it does hit a town hard when a car full of kids dies in a wreck.

I get some of the it just isn't worth it to push so hard , and that shows a lot in the work ethic all the way around most people just don't have the pride in going to work and doing a good job that they once did being sold a few times by different corporates and pooped on each time sure didn't help that attitude for those who had it happen to them.

municipalities hit with budget issues constantly will put off plowing till the snow stops because it saves money.

generally the old 10 minute early is right on time is fading from our Wisconsin culture and much of it is conditioning.

labor market has changed a lot.
I heard my boss interviewing a candidate last week it was a online meeting first interview and I could see and hear most of that conversation . another co-worker could also she says to me man he sure didn't talk like that 20 years ago , we would have been told we were taking "kitty" points for being a wuss. we still are oncall all night and put in a shift all day.
he was telling the candidate how if your up all night you can come in late , that wouldn't have slid 20 years ago.

I agree with Sharon and others. Preparedness is something it seems a lot lack around here these days. I as well seem to always be plucking people out of the ditch. Christmas tree season is the worst! I don't have the capability to just drive by.

I don't have studs but the chains are always in the truck along with jumpers, emergency jump battery, 30' tow strap and shackles, shackled hitch, axe, single buck crosscut, various clothes, med kit, mechanical kit, and some warm stuff. That all hides behind the back seat and in the bed is a short spade and skiers snow shovel.

As far as punctuality, this is also something I pride myself on. Unfortunately, as a carpenter/builder the work force is so light you do the best with the guys you got. I lean on mine as much as I can.

I kept chains handy when I lived up north. I only needed them a hand full of times but they paid for themselves all over again each time.

I run mud and snow rated tires on all my vehicles, I have them on all four corners even on my 2WD vans. Here in southeast PA we don't get as much snow as some of you other folks. But I get into plenty of mud and snow on job sites, running tractor trails on the trapline and up around my camp where the eleven miles of roads in my township are all dirt and mostly not winter maintained (no plowing or salting).

My pick up is 4WD.

Here on Tug Hill, highest snowfall east of the Rockies, we received over 30” of snow Sun &Mon. With all the salt used, state highways were bare by 6 PM Monday.

I don’t think studs are allowed I Minnesota on the paved streets anymore.
This day and age they spray the major arteries before the snow that enhances the melting of snow that falls. Supposedly gives the plow guys more time to get ahead of it. It’s not salt alone anymore. REALLY corrosive stuff.

Funny this came up. Went to visit a friend in the cities yesterday. I was going southbound on a side road and on my right was a concrete divider, what are they 4’ hi? On the other side of that divider was 3 northbound lanes of freeway. Going south a line of cars coming at me and in the middle of that line (maybe doing 40) a woman comes apart, comes into my lane sideways, then spins further and hits the bank on my side she is now facing south. I stopped within inches.
I got out, she did too, she is ok. While talking to her a big noise behind me, she ducks, I spin and looking back at that concrete divider which had been on my right there is a very nice new pickup with his driver front wheel hooked up over the divider pointing towards us, south, in that northbound highway traffic. He was about 20 yards back. The woman drove out opposite the way she started, in my lane, as I slipped and slid down to see if the pickup driver was in one piece. He was ok as he waived and that was good because given the conditions I could not have climbed that barrier to get up and help him.
How on earth the guy could be on a freeway going north, spin? and somehow motivate south and climb that divider I can’t imagine. The wheel was nearly torn off at the angle it was and the drivers front corner of that shiney new truck was a mess.
Up here the all wheel drive cars are the norm along with all terrain tires as mentioned above. Most uneducated drivers put way too much faith in those concepts.
AND THE WINNER IS….. TOW TRUCK DRIVERS! They have had a hay day this week.

Radials no studs and 4 wheel drive.

We get glare ice here and some times rain on it.

Some years ago I was heading to my line with trailer full of machines and the roads were glare ice. I made it 30 miles and I was having trouble slipping so turned around home. I found out that my 4 wheel drive had gone out. I don’t know how long it had been out.

We use plenty of salt on the roads...no need for good tires.

The brine spray is awful, much worse than the old rock salt when it comes to corroding metal it seems.

Drive like a sane man and be observant when in traffic. All weather tires set at 28 PSI will help a lot.

Before radials it was bias tires that had flat spots until you drove for a while if they didn’t break them bead. And posi-traction!

Bingo, but no one wants to get up any earlier in winter to drive to work. That’s why, 400lbs per lane mile of salt in NY.
