Tent Camps. No matter how miserable they happen to be, they are always memorable. The last few years, all of our tent camps have been hunting or trapping camps. Can't think of anything more pleasant than a wall tent in the snow, some place to sleep between checking traps.

This camp was up on the North Fork of the St. Joe River. Beaver Camp. Rained 8 straight days. Lisa called camp "A River Runs Through It".

Caribou hunt. Weather too nice for the wall tent.

Not mine, though I have camped in many.

This was my fathers and grandfather's family deer camp in the late 50s and early 60s, western CO.

Every camp has its own feeling, nuance.

Really like those big cedars, firs and hemlocks along the St Joe. It's a magical place of trees.

Thanks for sharing, Jack.

Sorry Jack, my best were probably the wall tent camps I hunted out of Near Lolo Pass and north up the Clearwater.
Can’t find the pics.
I do however like the color of that coyote your skinning in the first pick. Wishing I had four like that for a project I want to have done.

Dang Osky. Dig around a bit more and find that Lolo Camp. Were you on the North Fork of the Clearwater?

Here is another picture of that coyote up on the Joe. For up there, he was nice color.

Camp on Chirikof. My tent is the closest. Weather port was for food storage and cooking, drying off. Note 5 gallon cans of kerosene for the heater set along side weather port. I would sweep a five gallon bucket of sand out of the weather port every day or two. The camp was know as the Sand Shack. We would be in camp 3-4 months depending on the ship schedule. Of all the camping I have done the Fox camps on the islands were by far the most comfortable. I would much rather be in one of the fox camps than a camper. [Linked Image]

Mark -

I was hoping you'd grace these pages with a few more Aleutian pictures. Look at all that sun! Thanks!

This is my first and last attempt at trapping from a tent. Due to low quality equipment the nights were cold and smokey. The dog absolutely insisted on sleeping outside

Chirikof had more sun than the other islands. But you still took pictures when it was dry. First pic is standing at my tent looking more or less south out of the bowl. The other is the SE end of my camps line. There was two camps on the island, two guys to a camp. The sand shack was on the west side of the island, about to the narrow spot east to west.

Thanks Jack, it was a chance of a life time, to me to get to spend time on the islands. I really enjoyed the time I got to spend there.

First winter on my own on lower Nowitna. No pics unless I dig! 10x12 Alaska tent and tarp canvas tent. 3 rounds of logs, spruce pole frame. Blue poly tarps over the top. Home made 55 gal. drum stove. Spent the whole winter in that tent, even thru the 40 below spells. Marten everywhere. Small dog team. Beaver trapping in Feb.-Mar. Plenty of those around also.
Good memories!
Winter of 1979-80.

Man, martentrapper! What you did on the Novi is what legends are made from. I suspect that tent got a little claustrophobic at times.

Good on you!

Those Alaska style wall tents were a common sight all along the Yukon River they were home for everyone at fish camp, spring camp, seal camp, and moose camp, and I trapped out of one on and off for several winters. I still have a 10 X 12. I used to have a 7X9 for a spike camp too.

I find the pictures with the truck parked next to the tent a bit strange. I never saw that before, here its always a boat or snowmachien.
