Some marten I caught had pretty bad fleas so I did the raid garbage bag trick before I skinned to kill them. I washed the fur after skinning but now after being put up some of the fur still had a greasy look to it? I’m assuming this is due to the raid, what can I do to get it out?

I've not had greasy residue from raid say lawn and garden but raid ant and wasp poison is oily as I recall.
Shake the fur good in a bag with a couple 3 good handfuls of sawdust. That should get the worst of it.

I doubt if it's the raid giving the fur a greasy look. It's probably grease that did not come out in your wash. Sprinkle some sawdust or borax into the fur and brush it out. This should do the job for you.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Agree with Drasselt, never had any residue from the house/garden raid (green can). Can't stand the smell but everything gets sprayed and bagged first. I'd try what BCT said too with borax. Fill a tub and drywash your furs in it. Scrub the borax in real good and then brush it out.

Borax works wonders on greasy furs. My solution though is just not use raid. I get some fleas on me but they gone as soon as you take a shower. You can’t tell me some fleas on you is gonna hurt you more than the chemicals you breathe and absorb from the raid

Bob, not so much about getting the fleas on me, or raid v. fleas. I'm considering my long term health....my wife is pretty understanding, but she does have limits. Bringing fleas into the house might spell the end of it all eek

Need to also consider if you have pets in the house.
I sprayed everything that wasn't frozen solid. Never had a problem with raid being oily but I agree that sawdust and/or borax is a good place to start

Does it have a greasy “look”, or is it greasy?

Good fur should have a sheen to it.

I’ve sprayed thousands and thousands of critters with purple can raid and never had any issue with residue.

You don’t need to soak the critter, just a quick shot up and down both sides. I don’t even bag them.

I wouldn’t wash anything in dish soap. It’ll take the natural oils out of the fur, removing even that natural luster. Use a gentle laundry detergent.

Here's what I use. Buy at Farm & Fleet if you have a store in your area. I'm sure other pet supply places would carry it.

Seems to end the crawling to anything sprayed. Acts in about 1 minute. Dries reasonably fast or wipe down with a paper towel when finished skinning. Smells great.

Just &330 I was thinking the same thing I have been trapping for about 50 years .And what I do not know about trapping is a whole lot more than what I do know about it But than again I hope I learn something new on the last day I am still alive here on this earth That would mean my brain and BODY ARE STILL HEALTHLY ENOUGH TO WANT TO UNDERSTAND A LITLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE WORLD WE LIVE IN .

X2 One of the reasons we are trappers, a never ending student of nature!

Skin mites are another concern when you handle marten/sable, especially because unlike fleas they're tiny and invisible. They can burrow in the skin and cause scabies-like rash on delicate skin (usually behind the ears and around the waist). They're more or less species-specific, meaning they won't be able to reproduce in human skin and your immune system will kill them eventually, but it can be unpleasant and take a while to heal. Imidacloprid flea/tick spray for dogs and cats works really well both as a preventative measure and as treatment. I think women and kids are more prone to getting skin mites from animals than men, because our skin is thinner.

Ticks, fleas, lice and worms are a nice collectible bonus, though - put them in vials and you can make a parasitologist happy....

Gross. One more thing to worry about Tatiana!

100% of the wolves I've skinned are infested with dog lice (at least I think that's what they are). They all get a good spray-down and wrapped in a tarp for a bit. When they're unrolled this is what they look like sick
