My plan is to use alum as a soak then rub some tanning oil.into it before it dries then break the hides. I had good results using aluminum sulfate (alum) last year. Ammonium alum is more expensive. Has anyone had a chance to compare aluminum alum vs ammonium alum? Thanks!

I have used aluminum potassium sulfate, which i believe is the same as what is called alum-not 100% sure.
It works the same way on a pelt.
The main thing is to get ph test papers and keep the ph level correct no matter which you use to acidify the immersion.
Some alums are food grade or medical grade so are more highly refined and thus more expensive.
Same with aluminum sulfate-higher refined is used in water treatment plants and lesser refined used as soil treatment.Similar thing as road salt, haying salt and table salt.
Make sure the aluminum sulfate you use to tan is iron free especially if using it in combination with vegetable tannins-it will turn your leather black and stain light fur.

According to bruce rittel they are interchangeable. Though he does recommend that if you use Alum Sulphate, get the Iron free. If it has iron it will have a yellow tint, the pure stuff is white
