I just got a dozen new snares for Christmas! Do I need to boil them before use? Are they still good if they are still silver? I don't really know how to die traps so hopefully they will still work... also is there an easy method to making a snare stand that works halfway decent?

First of all can you describe your snairs. Cable, length, lock, design. End swivled or center swivled. Then let's go from there.

I think they are 7x7, 60 inches, micro lock design and I'm assuming end swivelled

Your in the middle of the season-just hang them out as they are, then next year dye and wax with the rest of your traps.

Boil or simmer in a pan of water with a baking soda. This will dull them down and take any oil off of them.

Boco is right, just go use them for now. As for prep later, all I'd do is lightly hit them with some flat spray paint.

You really don't need to do anything.
Hanging them from a fence post next summer will turn them gray.
Paint then if you think you need camo.
I do NOT wax snares.

For supports you can use 9ga wire and fasten with electrical tape.

Yes you could but I have never found 9ga wire necessary when 11ga wire do the job just as well and is more pliable. I also want my snare to release from the support wire quickly thus electrical tape is out as far as I am concerned. I recommend a double ferrule for the snare support collar. [Linked Image]

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I would use them the way they are. If you boil them they won't last near as long. You will takes the oil out of the shares and they will rust from the inside out. I have used snares that I have just built the same day when I am running short and they still catch them.

If you use snares at jackpots you need to wax them or they will rot out after time.

Spray paint them brown and set them when the dry. Don’t boil them.

This is what I did with some new snares that I got about two weeks ago. Caught 4 fox with them since then.

Why do I carry 10mm? Because shooting twice is just silly.

Just get out and have fun. Try new things and let the critters teach you. Theirs alot of experience hear on TMan so try what you think will work for you and don't be afraid to ask questions. There's no teacher like experience.

You don't have to do anything special, but using Dakota Line dip wouldn't hurt if you decide to remove the shine

I have always boiled in baking soda water. Pretty sure I have snares that are close to twenty years old and they haven't rusted. I do keep them dry during the off season. Have caught a lot of critters with dull gray snares.

Just hit with some flat brown and tan spray paint, let air out a day or so then find some trails!
