Looking for the best all around fleshing beam. Would a 5or7" beam be sufficient for lets say coon, otter, beaver, and muskrat. Im a new trapper and just trying to figure out what the best system would be.

I like the wider beams myself.

For muskrats, and occasional possum, I lay them head downward on the beam and push the flesh off that way. To this gives the hides a bit of cushion (like the old towel trick for possums) and you don't have to worry about fitting smaller rats over the beam.

I use a 7” but if I were doing a lot of skinnier critters like rats and mink I’d want a narrower one.

6" beam works for me, Coyote, Fox, Raccoon, Possum, Muskrat, Fisher, Skunk and even Beaver. The only critters I don't do on the beam is Mink and Weasel, I do them on the forming boards.

I used 2 beams, one 7" and one about 5". The larger worked well for coyote, coon, otter. The smaller for fox, possum, bobcat, rats. I didn't catch a lot of beaver and made due with the 7" but would have liked something a good bit wider for them.

I have a beam that is tapered on the end so I can do everything from beaver to possum on it.
For rats and mink I made a smaller, narrower one.

I use 2 beams. A small bench top for rats, mink and finer work and a large one made from a 2x6 that easily handles everything else. Both were made from construction grade SPF and took less than an hour to finish.
I'll see if I can find pictures

Just happy to be here.

You don't need two beams. A 2x6 in the shape of a large fox board works great for animals fisher size up including wolves.
For fleshing Rats, Mink, Marten, Weasels and Squirrels use the broad you will stretch the pelt on, or if using wire for rats use a small rat board to flesh on. Pull the pelt on so that you can flesh the side and then flip the broad to do the other side. Then straighten the pelt out so you are ready to tack the pelt on the board. Then finish the belly and back, leaving the saddle membrane on the pelt, except mink if it has a lot of fat under the saddle.
A curved small pelt (stirrup) flesher is the ideal tool for the fleshing of rats, mink/marten and other small animals when using their forming boards in the fleshing process.

I've had several pelt fleshers used for rats, mink, etc. I have the same one you have pictured. I agree it's the best one out there that I've ever used.

I made the PVC system, 10", 8", 6" and 4" beams. In my opinion the 4" beam is useless, the 10" and 8" beams have some validity, but the 6" beam gets 99% of the fleshing time and works well.

Buddy made a PCV setup with 3 different beams that slide into a slot so you can scrape everything from mink to beaver just pick the size beam you need.
