I've got an 09, same motor as my moms 17, and my dad has an 05 with the same motor that is currently setting because it is only running on three cylinders. . . but it has 426,000 on it and very few issues up until then. Mine is the SR (base model) and they came with higher gears than other models. Mine is WAY too high geared, but the motor hasn't had an issue, only 150K on it, which is just getting broke in for a Toyota. I know my moms is also a base model and while its gears are higher than the other models, they are lower than the ones in my truck, depends on the year which gears were put in them. Something to check on when buying.
Mine is a 5 speed, extended cab, 4x4 and the gas mileage isn't spectacular. It gets good empty (low twenties) but with a snowmobile trailer behind it I'm getting 14-15 mpg, and about the same with a fourwheeler trailer. Got an old 89 with the 22re, and even with a lift and 4.88 gears it does about 17 pulling the same trailer and 20 empty. Had a 2000 with the 3.4 V6 and it did as good as my newer four cylinder pulling a trailer and around 20 empty. And it actually had enough power its tongue wasn't hanging out whenever you came to a hill. That truck I sold at 400,000 (it is still being driven today) and the only thing I had ever done to the motor was change oil, change timing belt a couple times, spark plugs twice, and changed a fuel injector that went bad. Oh and the alternator twice. I've owned half a dozen 22re four cylinders, the new 2.7 four cylinder and that 3.4 V6. In my mind the 3.4 was the best motor Toyota made, but most of their motors are good.
