What's the most unusual story/claim you've seen an individual tell about their skill with a firearm?

I saw someone recently say that they used to get headshots on groundhogs at 300 yards with iron sights... Feels like one of those stories that has grown with time.

I've made many incredible shots over the years.
Red fox at 400+ yards with a .22lr.
Red fox at 1/2 mile with a .243.
QUITE A FEW full out running coyotes at over 300 with various rifles.
Put enuff lead in the air and you just get "lucky" sometimes.

I once killed a groundhog at slightly over 300 yards, with a 12 gauge shotgun. I shot a 3 1/2 load of steel BBs at it. I got 1 pellet in the brain and one in the rear right leg. The other 82 or so steel pellets missed or didn't pierce the skin.

Had a guy we used to call "Lying Roger", tell me a story about shooting a deer with a 45/70 one time. I forget the yardage it was supposed to be at, but a long ways. He said, "I elevated X feet over its back, and shot. Leaned the gun against the stump I was using for a rest, and ate half a biscuit and . . . thump, it fell over."

I said this to my grandad about my dad shooting at a squirrel. I was 5 or 6 at the time but to hear my brother tell the story it was last week. Anyway I told Granpa that Dad was a terrible shot, he shot at a squirrel so many times the tree fell down and the squirrel ran away….

I knew a guy in college in the early 1980s who said he used to shoot deer or antelope with open sights at 600 yards. He just put the sight picture where the neck and body met.

He also used to notch deer ears with a rifle to keep track on them on their place for some reason, I can't remember now.

He also tracked the same fox through the snow for 20 miles only to find where a plane with skis had landed and got his fox (back in the fur boom of the late 1970s) first. Then he had to walk back home.

He had plenty of such stories. One "interesting" dude...

I asked for trapping permission at a ranch a while ago. When I asked the question he said, "you wanna trap coyotes, huh? I'm at war with the coyotes..." I thought it was a done deal. I went inside and was talked at for hours about shooting coyotes in the ear holes at 400 so as not to damage their hides. Regularly.... When we finally got back to trapping he said he was worried about his cows. I wish I could have those hours back.

One of my pet peeves is the shots that are merely a product of shooting a lot. For instance a robinhood in archery. Guys collect those things like they are trophies!? Shoot enough and eventually they will touch. The only true robinhood I saw was a guy who builds some trad bows I shoot. He put one in inside the first, and then one in the second. Three stuck together. Unreal.

definitely 2 schools of thought

I never saw my great uncle miss a deer , also never saw him shoot one over 50 yards

I have a cousin who will let any shot that is safe go , he gets a lot more deer but also misses a more.

skill helps , so does lead sent down range. my son was actually making about 50% of the shots on a 22x24 inch plate standing from 405 yards (lazered) with the SFAR-308 you can just stay on the target make a tiny shift and let the next one fly your your ready to shoot again before you even hear the hit or not.

I had a guy at the shooting range once tell me that he shot an elk the season before at "587 yards". I said to him, "you must have the rifle zeroed at a few hundred yards, that bullets going to drop a few feet at that range". He replied; "Nope, zeroed at 200 yards, it's just a flat shooting rifle, I just held right at the top of his back".

Yea, right; I'm not a ballistics expert, but I know enough that he either got lucky and was holding waaay over it's back by accident, or he was lying.

I actually never got a robin hood but I used to shoot the nocks of my brothers arrows for fun I didn't get them every time but enough to be really annoying.

Hmm.... Remember the caliber ? Could run it in my ballistic app real quick. Depending he actually may have not been exaggerating TOO much

A fella I used to work with said he could break more eggs than he would miss at 100 yards, offhand, with iron sight flintlock. I told him I’d give him $20 for every egg he broke, he would give me $20 for every shot that missed. He said he didn’t want to take my money.

Knew of a fella who used to shoot flintlock. Said he would have to add salt to his powder as at the distance he was shooting he didn't want the meat to spoil by the time he got to the deer.
