When trapping on North Carolina Gamelands the following applies to any bait used at a trap site.

At each trap, trappers may use a single bait site of grain, fruit, or other foods when trapping if the food is not a processed food product,...........
Processed food products are any food substance or flavoring that has been modified by the addition of ingredients or by treatment to modify its chemical composition or form or to enhance its aroma or taste. This includes: food products modified by sugar, honey, syrups, oils, salts, spices, peanut butter, grease, meat, bones, or blood; candies, pastries, gum, and sugar blocks; and extracts of such products.

My question is what could I use in dogproof traps for raccoon? Other than on NC Gamelands I use dry cat food with bacon grease added to it. This regulation eliminates dry cat food and the bacon grease.

Thinking about, perhaps, raisins. But is a raisin a grape that has been "by treatment to modify" ?

Any suggestions of what might could be used that won't violate this regulation? Want something that works, is easy to use, doesn't require refrigeration like raw fish. And as far as raw fish goes, per this regulation, if you don't use a whole raw fish you have modified its "form". Cut it up and it's modified.

It's another way to eliminate trapping. Make it so difficult that no one can trap. Death of a thousand cuts.

You need to contact your states DNR, an ask to speak to the moron that wrote that crap, and ask what it means. I use the burnt sludge from the bottom of fish fry cookers, work great on coon.

Sounds like lure only as lure is not bait should pass the test.

You need to talk to your county game warden to find out how he sees it your better off being friendly with the game warden than getting a ticket

This is what I'd recommend...and have done when there's rule/law changes in the synopsis

Raisins are nominally "sun dried" grapes but they are indeed processed with heat and sulfur to provide a consistent uniform product without spoilage.

I'm curious what the justification for this is?

To prevent piles of dog/cat food?
To prevent obesity in the wildlife?
To prevent littering of candy wrappers?

I just don't see any reasonable justification.

some people have a very different idea of what a processed food is

and you hope it was the idiot who thinks chicken nuggets with bbq seasoning added are processed but plain chicken nuggets are not.

and some sense can be found and this corrected.
