Folks,

Has anybody caught a skunk in a snare? how bad does it smell? I have a problem and the animal likes to go behind my shed, which is just 5 feet from the house.
If I kill it with a snare, will the stench be so bad that I will smell it in the house? what is the radius of bad smell and how quickly does it dissipate?

Merry trapping in 2023 smile

Use a covered cage and move it away from your house or a tube trap snare not my first choice.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Don’t use the snare I’ve had 2 in snares both dead both sprayed. Use a covered cage if you have an old ice chest fill it with water set beside cage. Maze sure cage fits the ice chest, don’t ask me how I know this lol.

I understand that it will spray. My question is how bad is it? can you smell it from 20 feet 2 hours after the spray?
I do not have a trapping cage, but will be happy to make one if people offer a blueprint.
no welding please, wood and chicken wire setup if possible.

If it sprays in your yard you’ll be able to smell it from a lot farther than 20 feet, and for a lot longer than 2 hours lol. I’ve caught skunks in beaver snares and they generally don’t spray upon being caught. But they do when you shoot them because usually the snare didn’t kill them as they were caught around the midsection. The only reliable way to do it is the way law dog describes

I do ADC work. Had a guy call me about one he had in a 110 body grip. It trap was on the sides of the skunks neck and still alive. I could smell it a block before I got to his house. A week late I went by his house and could still smell the skunk.

Cage trap 5x5 or next size up. Wrap and tape with a trash bag leaving the back open for a tunnel effect. Set on the trails. Ideally two or more traps set coming and going.

They are omnivores like coons so sweet baits work to avoid cats. But cat food and sardines work as well. Basically anything that'll catch a coon.

Once caught approach from the side speaking softly to it. Pick up and carry away.

I have yet to be sprayed.

You forgot, blink you're eyes at it lovingly. Lol
Just have your pump sprayer ready with 2 cups of baking soda dissolved in a gallon of hot water.
After the catch pore 2 cups of hydrogen peroxide in, give it a good shake and pump it up.
Spray the entire area, it may take a second time to get it all.
And fresh coffee grounds on a plate in the house.
Good luck
