Finally got the otter put up tonight. Thanks to Beav in a different post I was able to flesh the tail much easier than I have been. Otter tails are definitely a challenge to flesh.

Looks very good. It a shame they are not averaging $145 like several year ago. Very cool animal and most likely the strongest I ever caught. You got the boarding down

No way I am selling this for the 20 to 25 dollar averages I keep reading about. I've sent all mine in for tanning and they are becoming canvasses for beadwork projects.

Here is a quiver project I have in the works.

Do you have an otter quota limit in WI or is it just an open season?

We have a limit of 2 per Trapper, no quota limit for the state.

Beav mentioned in an older post about doing the edges first, then the middle. I worked slow, and careful (I've cut a tail before and struggled with others). I worked a bit on each side, then the center. About half to three quarters of an inch at a time. Came out really nice and was far less work than trying to do middle then edges (which is how I have done raccoons and tried before on otter). I kept the knife angled away from the tail slightly (not perpendicular) and just used short pushes, making sure not to slice sideways at all, and not push into the tail.

The trick to fleshing otter tails is to get the tailskin to lay flat on the beam. This is easily done by taking a minute with a sharp knife and scoring the two beads of fat on each side of the tail that causes it not to lay flat. Then just flesh it right off with the scraper.
Or you can clean skin the tail with a beaver knife..

I always thought you guys were allowed more than 2.. crazy stuff when Illinois allows more otters than Wisconsin. Nice looking otter!!

I use an Ulu knife. Easy to control as you apply a slight slicing action as you go down.
