I have been taking Coumadin for 32 years now. Need it because of a metal mechanical heart valve, Dacron ascending Aorta and three Teflon washers. I am now 72. I have been scared, but what you going to do? Quit? Just how do you do that?

Hang in there. At 52 odds are good you will survive. If that medicine is too pricy go on a once a year drive to El Paso. There are companies there that will take you across the border in big vans and bring you back. Buy enough medicine to last awhile and it wont be near so dear. take somebody with you, take turns sleeping, you wont even have to rent a room. with two drivers even if your clear up in Chicago it will be a one day trip down, a day to get your meds and a day back home. Could rent a room in El Paso for a shower and a bed fore you go home. Any of those truck stops will sell you a private room shower if you dont want a motel room. If your wife goes there is plenty room in one for both of you dont buy two.

Coumadin requires frequent blood checks. Drug manufacturers may be able to help you with expensive medications. The makers of Eliquis (sp) can help. Drug manufacturers should be able to help, since they're subsidized by the govt to begin with.

My favorite verse is Mark 4:39. “ peace, be still”
Jesus calms the sea.
Be calm . Listen internally for his voice and yours. The answers will come ……
In the meantime “peace, be still” and heal.

Ex-wife has been on Warfarin ( rat poison ) 20+ years now for a pulmonary embolism. Requires the same testing regiment as Coumadin. She chose Warfarin over Coumadin because of drug costs. And yes, changes in diet affects the consistency of dosages and testing frequency for both Warfarin and Coumadin.

Foxxkidd44 My wife has been on Eliquis for 4 years now and will be on thinners the rest of her life due to a genetic disorder which causes her blood to clot. Our pharmacist helped us sign up for this program. Its a $10 copay for each refill. You do have to resign up every few years though.
