First impression would be 56#. Then some thought it might be 57. Then someone else thought it was so heavy they scratched 70 above. Whats it feel like?

Your no help! grin
I shoot a compound, so not really sure. 58" seems pretty long for a draw length though....

Typically recurve bow weight stated on the bow is for a 28" draw length. The 58" is the length of the bow itself. From what I see its a 58" bow with a draw weight of 56 pounds @ 28" draw length. The poundage will increase or decrease about 2 pounds for every inch over or under 28". I don't know what that 70 would be. Maybe at the previous owners draw length the bow registered 57 pounds and they didn't cross out the 6?

Put it on a scale and check it.

It's a 58-inch bow, but not sure what the rest of it means. There are no draw lengths on recurve bows. Does the 70 look like it's original? If so it might be 70 pounds but that's pretty darn stout for a recurve!

My guess is that it's a 56# draw weight (measured at 28 inches as mentioned above) and 58 inch length, and the 70 and the 7- were added by someone later.

Not sure how well you will be able to see this, but the 7 and 70 look to be scratched in [Linked Image]

So I'm guessing 56# draw weight at 28"....

Yep, I'm going with what I said in the previous post. Do you have a string for it? What brand is it?

Strung, the bow measures 54.5".
So unstrung it very well could be 58".

There is a way you can find the history of Bear bows by the serial number. Maybe there is something similar for Darton. Sure is cool to find the background on some of these bows.

I bought a 1953 Bear recurve at a garage sale for $15 and turned down $500 for it just because I think it's too cool to sell!

That's not how you measure the length of a recurve or longbow. You run a cloth tape across the back of the bow (side facing the target) from tip to tip. That's the 58" length. Weird that the poundage sign doesn't line up with the 56 on it. Best thing to do would be to put it on a scale and check poundage at 28" draw length

Either way, more poundage than I need and too short of a bow. Like seeing those old bows brought out again though. I have a long draw length so I shoot a 64" recurve, less finger pinch and a longer working limb for me. Have you checked to make sure the limbs don't have any twist in them?

Look up the specifications for that model bow on line. I would guess it is a 56 lb. draw weight at 28''.

I agree ^ Since that is an older bow only use b-50 or b-55 string material. B-55 is a little better imo. 12-14 strands and serve for proper nock fit.
