Just replenished my supply of "dirty" wool from MTP. No surprise that it arrived in record time. I don't know how the Cavens' manage to defy the laws of gravity and time with the USPS.

The quantity appears to be equivalent to a "bail" - the average amount of wool sheared from an average sized sheep. I would guess its weight to be around 1 to 1-1/2 pounds, which is a bunch. It has multiple uses on the trap line. A little goes a long way. There is enough in this bail to follow me into my next lifetime. Neat stuff!

Jonathan,

The average finewool sheep will shear 8 to 10 lbs of wool in my country... that includes tags and belly wool...

The wool in your picture is pretty clean... if you want some wool that will really attract predators use tags... that is the wool between the back legs, belly and face... it has more smell than any of the other...

Good Luck and God Bless you and yours,

bulletbox,
TEXAS

Even sheep are smart enough to shade up when it gets over 100....

Bullet, Thank you for that clarification on the "bail" terminology. I am not in sheep country, but heard that term and it's weight ratio somewhere along the trail.

Bulletbox is basically on the money with our sheared wool avgs. here as well. He is also on the money with the odors that are more prevalent on certain areas of the animal. However wool will add interest to a set up when applicated in such a manner to entice or when used to hold lure or bait.

LMC, I bought it through their online catalog. It was $11.25 total. The shipping was more than the wool - their minimum rate for an order under $40.

If you can find someone raising sheep you could probably buy scraps more than likey get it for nothing, might even be able to get a couple dead sheep laying around.

Otis, I had some of the good stuff that Bullet mentioned from a friend who raised sheep when I lived in Wisconsin. I have not seen any flocks of sheep yet in my present, rural neighborhood travels. I really haven't looked that deliberately hard either.

Thanks for the reminder!

Crowheart, you are in sheep country. Do you use wool in trapping coyotes? I never did, even in trapping sheep killing coyotes. I'm just wondering if its something they use where theres no sheep.

the best wool and the best calf hide comes from coyote killed, if you ever have the oppurtinity to get coyote killed fresh do so, it will be sticky with coyote saliva and is the best there is, second best is melted into the wool summer rotten wool or hide, third best is calf hide fresh wrapped on wood concrete form stakes and then stored in rolled up feed sacks to rot for about a month, wrap the sticks in saran wrap ist so they taint, instead of drying out.

Hey jonathan I could probably box up a dead sheep off my cousins place and ups it on up to you. Comparing dead sheep as a draw to deer I have had better luck with deer and deer parts, those deer leg bones are my favorite flat set attractor.

Otis, Put a respirator on, skin one of those bad boys/girls, weigh it, and I'll see if I have to sell my truck to cover the shipping.
