The digging part on the sod buster and other ones I have bought always breaks off when I start digging in frozen ground. Anyone else have experience with this? I hate carrying a claw hammer and a heavy hammer to drive anchors.

I bent up two in three sets this winter and had to switch to a Pulaski to finish the third set. I took one of those after I straightened it out and welded a chunk of angle iron to it from the underside. then I cut the side of the angle iron that was 90 from the digging blade at an angle, from the back of the hammer down to a point towards the end of the blade. Works pretty good so far.

Great off the shelf hammer fir trapping is masonry/brick hammers. I use mine more fir doing remakes or when i know I'm in easy digging soil. Sodbuster type hammers are my main hanmer in clay/sod/frozen ground abf driving stakes.

But please continue to reply as I am sure someone else will be hunting one at some point

I hit a few garage sales and pick up some good tools on occasion for pennies on the dollar. Some I weld a piece of truck spring to it while others I can use as is. The two on the right I welded my spade to them while the others are framing or masonry hammers and are used as is. I don't think I spent more than $2 on any of them.

A piece of old leaf spring works a good as anything welded on a hammer.

I bought a 3lb long-handled Estwing from Tom Stalker and it’s a beast. I would highly recommend both a hammer from him and a driver. They are second to none and I wish I had purchased them years ago.
