Ran across this coon today. I assume it's rabies or distemper maybe? Looked like it had been there a few hours. Wondering if I should call dnr? First time posting a video....hope it works.

that thing is bad sick. Shoot it then build a fire and burn it

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

I've seen it in person many years ago. It was a skunk.

Maybe poisoned? But proceed with caution

Dealt with a few racoons with what I THINK was distemper, wandering around middle of day in August, eyes a mess.
Health Dept kept asking exactly WHERE they were, was close to county line.
They wanted other county to deal with it.
No one came out. Dispatched, buried, bleached everything.

Had a skunk some years back acting the same, got in with my kids goats.
I shot skunk.thru lungs, gloved up, triple bagged and put on ice.

Called county health dept ( was on Labor Day).
Tech on call eventually called me back.
Bite anyone?
Nope.
You touch it?
Told her what I did.

You're good, just bury it. It's Labor Day!

Called friend in sheriff's office, tech called me back for directions, lol.

Turned out positive for rabies.

Unfortunately, caused all.kids' livestock to get quarantined, missed county fairs, had to pay for vets, etc

Now, I just shoot, shovel, and shut up.
And assume everything is rabid

If Distemper/Rabies is plausible based on the rut and denning cycles right now I'd be concerned with other coons in that location being infected.

They quarentine for a reason, to contain the disease to keep it from spreading. Going around it is putting everybody else's animals at risk!

Oh, I understand that, I worked on a rabies project decades ago.
Just the whole, "Not my problem/ don't want to deal with it/ let me get back to my nap" gov attitude cheesed me off.

I shot it and left it laying. I did look at it's eyes and they looked fine...I mean not an obvious mess. Don't know what they could quarantine as it was about a mile from the nearest anything. It was about 30 yards from where I hang my treestand. I'm gonna hunt tomorrow evening so I might carry a shovel with me.
