I used to always pick out a beaver L or XL as I figured these were the right age class for migrating in to new territory and then chop up their fresh castor and add water. Sometimes a few drops of sac oil as well. I would put all of that in a half gallon milk jug and slosh it around real good. Always had fantastic luck on it but after a few days it would taint and quit working so I would have to make a new batch. When castor started going up I went away from this as it was pretty wasteful of castor.

BP,
I put whole castors in a gallon glass jar (about 3/4 full) and then added glycerin till jar was filled to lid. That was about 10 years ago. Didnt open or touch it for 3 or 4 years. Kept in dark shed. I have now been pouring that glycerin off those castors for 5 or 6 years and using it. It has the best castor smell and is catching beavers. I keep adding more glycerin.

I have a gallon jar of whole oil sacs I did same way at same time. Same results. Pour off that tincture of glycerin and its identical to sac oil.

Thank God For Your Blessings!

I've never used just the squeezing but have added it to my fresh ground GREEN castor. I only grind medium female castor and usually just one or two. It goes in one ounce wide mouth bottles I carry one in my pocket and freeze the others. It takes so very little castor as a beaver nose is incredible. I am also doing mostly damage trapping and maintenance so I'm on top of the bvr. I am not trying draw him from across a river etc.

I keep female sac oil in same style one ounce and treat it the same by freezing what I'm not currently using. I quit mixing castor and sac oil and use each separately depending on situation.

Wondering if doing the same think with high proof alcohol would accomplish the same thing except not allow for taint. You add some cost, but lose less castor

I actually used to select younger migratory age males for my mixes. Preferring ones that were bit up "nerd" beavers. Always worked well.

I've got a bunch of new 1 oz boston round bottles so I think i'm going to lay up a supply and freeze it. I've got 26 beaver to skin right now and I'll bet it wouldn't be a problem to get 10-15 bottles full.

It's amazing how little castor is needed. I used to carry peanut butter jar and use big gob...now a one ounce goes long long way...I use it almost as sparingly as sac oil well ok a little more than sac oil

I take the green castor sacs, and chop them up fine with a scalpel knife. I put the chopping in a cheap food shredder from Dollar General. I add glycerin, a few muskrat glands, black strap molasses ( as per Boco ), poplar bud oil, a bit of peppermint schnapps, some Everclear alcohol, and a little sodium benzoate. I run it through the processor until it’s thoroughly mixed. I make a pint at a time. I have good luck with this stuff.

It is more blessed to give than to receive

One of the best beaver trappers I ever knew trapped the Willamette around Corvallis. Jack Rogers was originally from Louisiana and had learned to trap there. He used a big milk jug filled with cut up castors and water. He would just slosh some of it behind his sets and on to the next. I was trapping the river the same time he was and I if passed by his sets before he got there I would see every last one of his wires headed out to deep water. Having a good nose back then I could smell the castor at his sets as I went by in my boat!

So one day I gave him the high sign and pulled my boat up along side his boat and asked him about how he mixed his castor up. He just grinned and didn't say anything, but I could see the jug and figured out the rest!

Prior to that I had been doing the standard mix of ground castor, gliserine and sac oil. When I switched to liquid castor ala "Jack Rogers" my beaver trapping really took off. Had to learn to skin faster for sure! LOL

Went to the freezer and got some "stuff" thawing , I won't be able to wait 10 years will get some vodka and tincture the stuff with that and mix the glycerin and glycol in later. I'll use some of it to season some lion I got "cooking"! I use curiosity smell for beaver here when I feel they are avoiding my traps or a snare will work most of the time a little sac oil does it sometimes, I like the idea of the castor/or oil sac in liquid form cats should like it too!?
