I keep being amazed gy how few boating folks know how to belay a cleat. Its scary

When we still lived in Hilton Head I used to go around the marina and re tie about 70% of the boats there before any storm worth watching out for. Mainly because I did not want any stay drifting boat heading out to my anchorage during crap weather. Call it a preemptive strike

My favorite knot is a jug knot , a climbers knot is a close second , when pulling a submersible pump from a well that's on poly pipe I used a high bred version of an climbers knot because it didn't let go and worked similar to a Chinese finger cuff but I could remove it quickly when done .
The bowline , in line bowling , bowline on a blight , kings head knot , truckers botch , and clove hitch , the daisy chain is handy when dealing with a large extension cord just to name a few .
Another for winding up a long length of cable or cords is to over under it once learned you will love it if you ever work for a TV production company .

Like others have mentioned I forget the proper name of some but I can tie them in a hurry when needed .

You're friend along the snare line .

Learned and used basic knots while in the Coast Guard.

Started to do some other knots later. [Linked Image]

This is a great app for your phone if you forget a knot or want to learn new ones for about anything. I like a surgeon knot for tying a fluorocarbon leader on to braided line. I use a clove hitch all the time to tie a boat to a pier pole. Cracks me up when people try and tie the boat up and are on the struggle bus and you show them a clove hitch in about 2 seconds.

Many mentioned the trucker's hitch.

While I was securing a load a while back, a client asked me, "What did you guys do before the ratchet strap?"

I have to admit, in certain circumstances, like within an enclosed truck or trailer, the ratchet strap is a lot more convenient.

My wife’s family had a ski boat when I met her. Every rope (line) they had was full of knots, and Lord only help them if they needed to tie something. Even extion cords had knots. Didn’t both them at all. Worried me tremendously and I spent hours one day squaring away their sky ropes and anchor line. The three sisters could really foul a rope. They could not coil a rope either and forget throwing one to a swimmer/skier.

I was also in the Coast Guard. Served 27 years as a Reservist 67-94.

Top 3 of your 4 are probably the ones I personally use most. Good to know their properties too, like you can’t untie a bowline under strain or a marriage knot is permanent, etc. Someone mentioned a sheepshank and tho it’s a great name, how often is it really put into use?
[/quote]

I tie the sheepshank often. Probably have a half dozen in place at this time out in the hay barn.
The bow line is a great knot and I use it often. It is a weak knot though. Will break within the knot long before the ropes strength. Not sure of the name( we call it tree trimmer bowline) is when you take a extra go around the main line before completing the knot. Will put much more strength into the knot.

I knew there would be an amazing plethora of talent here , once again, in the art of knots. Makes me proud.

Yes sir, Michael, my father and I would do exactly the same as you, just before hurricanes at the marina where we docked our trawlers and airboats. He taught me how to cleat tie a boat , and we would just retie any we saw were wrong , in our last minute sweeps of the docks . Nice to have folks like you to care enough to save someone a lot of heartache.

I sure learned how to dally and slip knot tie horses without loosing any fangers ... wink

Horn, your knot photos are works of art.

I use a handful of knots all the time... You couldn't pull wire without a cat's paw and half hitches.

Let's see... Cats paw, half hitch, bowline, and one more that I cant remember the name of. I used to know a bunch but if you don't use them constantly you forget them.

we used to do that to all of our ropes on the ice sleds

used to have ice rescue trainings in boy scouts , different competitive events for a winter event in boy scouts
it kept all your lines organized

also got very good at one handed bowline

that also works for your extension cords just much larger loops it looks rather messy but comes undone with no knots so well.
