There is nothing magic about knots. But, for some reason onlookers seem to be amazed when I whip up one in everyday situations. Today, it happened to be a sheet bend. "That ain't ever goin' ta hold" says the guy. I guess tying knots has gone the way of writing cursive. Any way. my favorite knots...the ones I use on a very regular basis are: - Bowline
- sheet bend
- clove hitch
- timber hitch
How about you? any favorites? how about specialty stuff?

I don't often hang my granny...but:
it reminds me that I do use a whipping knot on tons of stuff.

Truckers hitch is one everyone should know how to tie along with a bowline. Use a blood knot quite a bit too.

I always show my 4 nephews some key knots to know...and a few neat ones.
Slippery Sheet Bend
Truckers hitch ( most important )
Bowline
Blood knot for fishing
Square knot
Nail knot.
Love knots....but always more to learn

How about you? any favorites? how about specialty stuff? Top 3 of your 4 are probably the ones I personally use most. Good to know their properties too, like you can’t untie a bowline under strain or a marriage knot is permanent, etc. Someone mentioned a sheepshank and tho it’s a great name, how often is it really put into use?

Used to rock climb, kinda a river rat around boats, know knots, can't always remember names, but always neat to impress somebody that only knows the roofers knot, 5 or 6 half hitches! (MY BROTHER) LOL

In addition to the OP's list I would add a figure 8 knot. I know a few good knots other than those listed, but I don't know their names.
Splicing is another set of skills that are handy to have. I think every outdoorsman should at least know how to make a "farmer's eye" with a piece of wire rope. This is a very handy splice that I find myself using at least once or twice a year.

in no particular order:
every day; square bowline
fishing; palomar/turl blood and nail
then truckers, diamond and squaw for hitches

Being able to tie a bowline under water in zero visibility has served me well. But just on day to day go to knot I think I probably use a Clove hitch more. Those two knots I can kind of just do most times. I know a lot more but at point now where have to sop think about it try couple times. There is definitely something to the use it or loose it with knots. At least for me.
