Probably a stupid question but one I figured was worth asking. Having never sold fur to a buyer on a route like this, how does a buyer typically like fur to be bundled/bagged together since he’s grading it right at the truck. I often see guys mentioning fur bags but I don’t have any of those and quite honestly don’t even know what type of bag they are. Is it ok to just bundle say 10-20 muskrat together with a bit of wire? Or on a fur hanger?

Like I said it’s a stupid question from a rookie fur seller as I’ve always had my furs tanned, but I can imagine these buyers have tight schedules and try to remain as efficient as possible. I don’t want to be the guy who slows the whole operation down.

WI Plumber -

Paper grocery bags, or cardboard boxes about the right size and work well for muskrats.

Many of the larger furs, just keep them clean and separate by species. Many people will put a tarp down in the back of their truck/car/van, or use large black plastic garbage bags to transport them. I would shy away from using wire to keep them together - but bailing twine or paracord would work better if you want to bundle them. This is most likely going to be cut for the buyer to separate each pelt to be graded.

I sold traps to him a couple of years ago. He gave me fair money.

I sold eight skinned Frozen beaver pelts to Trevor on Saturday morning to make room in my freezer. I had four blankets at $18 a piece, one extra large at 14 dollars, one large at $8, and two mediums at 3 a piece, which came to exactly 100 dollars. The result was a $12.50 average which was not too terrible considering the way things are and have been. I've been happy with Trevor so last couple of years.

I appreciate the response Mike. I ended up just fitting the furs into some new sandbags and castor in a part bag.

I sold some rats and castor to him tonight. Real nice guy and more than willing to answer any of my questions.[Linked Image]

A 2xl rat of the same grade is worth 3 xs what a lg is worth. A 50% reduction for a slight deduction which is a good grade rat with minor issues most times. Average collections of midwestern rats are in the mid $1.00 range.
45 WI rats are worth about 1 tank full of gas for a pickup truck. With universally low prices we have it sure takes the need or desire to drive around to several options because even a 20% increase in those 45 rats is less then $10. Could be the year to hold them a while if one has low cost decent storage.
