I am not sure whether to feel sorry for Pro-athletes or not. The owner of the investment company is making a killing off these athletes that unfortunately are extremely naive or just have so much money they never even bother to check the legitimacy of a "deal".

A mere $50,000 per acre, what a deal.

I once heard from an investor "when athletes start getting into something, it's time to get out"

Sadly for the landowners of Iowa, there is a reason your property taxes have jumped substantially to match that reported 17% increase in land values.

There's neighborhoods in Cincinnati where 1/3rd of an acre sells for over $150,000.00.

I doubt that land will stay farmland, unless it's for a very high value crop, like dope.

Of course the media gets it wrong like usual. They have $5 million in a pool to buy land. They bought a 104 acres in Bremer County for $10,000 an acre. So meaning they spent a little over $1 million so far. That is probably normal for good flat fields over there.

They can hold that as an investment that they plan to hold for long periods of time and get a small return on their investment. Or they could buy at 5 million and sell say for 2 million and harvest a huge, huge loss and in their tax brackets that could offset a lot of income. If they borrowed say 2.5 million of that and put 2.5 million down and sold in say a year their actually out of pocket losses would not be that great when the loss is calculated into their total tax situation.

That's a bargain compared to what land sales for in certain areas around here. Lots go for millions.

Not from Iowa but can’t remember all the recommendations that now is the time to sell. Some were right. Many were premature.

Your right the article made it sould like they spent $5 million on 104 acres. $10,000 and acre for good farm ground is pretty common in the Midwest.

Some farm ground sold in this area for $14,000 an acre this week. Some of it rough pasture, which will be leveled to farm. Another farm is up for sale for $13,000 an acre. It is 3/4 rough pasture and about 20 acres of crop ground.

Leveled to grow subsidized corn to turn into subsidized ethanol. Just crazy.

Capital gains will hurt. Maybe sell privately on five-year contract will ease the pain.

We set the record @ $26,250 per acre for farm ground where I live in Iowa last year. The area is almost completely flat, no fences, draws, creeks, etc.

I can see selling for a lower price than you paid to get the cash out of an investment if you need the liquidity, and then using the loss to offset taxes, but not purposefully losing a bunch of money to do that. That seems counterproductive. What am I missing here.
